Her Story

About Amanda

Amanda Fox is the Founder and Executive Director of Animal Research Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing research, education, and science-based policy solutions that protect biodiversity, improve public health, and reduce animal suffering. She helped establish the organization in 2017 and has led its growth through its official incorporation in 2021, guiding its mission to identify high-risk agricultural practices and modernize policies that promote ecological wellbeing and human health. Based in Seattle, Washington, Animal Research Initiative focuses on research, legislative advocacy, and public education to address complex challenges at the intersection of animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and public health.

Under Amanda’s leadership, Animal Research Initiative has developed impactful research initiatives and policy campaigns addressing issues such as octopus farming, waterfowl agriculture, animal testing, wildlife exploitation, and sustainable food systems. Her extensive research and advocacy efforts contributed to the passage of the world’s first octopus farming prohibition bill in Washington State in 2024, as well as additional legislative achievements including measures to prohibit the sale of animal-tested cosmetics, support the adoption of viable animals from testing facilities, and restrict exotic animal performances. Through collaboration with lawmakers, researchers, and community partners, Amanda continues to transform scientific findings into actionable policies that protect ecosystems, promote public health, and create a more compassionate and sustainable future.

Before dedicating herself full-time to Animal Research Initiative in 2024, Amanda built a successful career in retail operations and organizational leadership, serving as a store manager for Torrid and its sister brands, where she managed multiple locations and developed expertise in team leadership, strategic problem-solving, and operational excellence. She is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies through Arizona State University to further expand her knowledge of conservation and sustainability. Amanda attributes her success to the guidance of supportive mentors, a commitment to finding solutions, and her dedication to integrity and thorough research. Beyond her professional work, she is passionate about community service and animal advocacy, having volunteered with food banks and animal rescue organizations in Seattle. In her personal time, Amanda enjoys hiking, running, and spending time at the beach, activities that reflect her appreciation for nature and her commitment to protecting the environment.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Amanda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the support, mentorship, and encouragement I received from three incredible managers at Torrid who believed in my potential and helped me learn how to overcome the barriers I placed in my own path. They challenged me to grow, build confidence, and recognize my ability to achieve more than I thought possible. Much of my motivation has come from wanting to prove to myself that I am capable and to earn my own respect through hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Today, that same drive fuels my work with Animal Research Initiative, where the impact extends far beyond myself. The issues we address affect animals, ecosystems, public health, and communities, which inspires me to approach every project with passion, integrity, and a commitment to producing meaningful, well-researched solutions that create lasting change.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to focus on overcoming obstacles rather than spending time explaining why they exist. A manager at Torrid once told me that she did not want to hear excuses; she wanted to know what actions I was taking to find solutions and move forward. That mindset completely changed the way I approach challenges, teaching me to be proactive, resilient, and solution-oriented. I carried this lesson throughout my career and even into my military experience, where the focus was always on giving my best effort, staying committed, and continuing to push forward regardless of the circumstances. This perspective has shaped my leadership style and continues to guide how I approach my work and personal growth.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to focus their energy on overcoming obstacles rather than becoming discouraged by why those obstacles exist. Challenges are a natural part of any career, and meaningful progress comes from developing solutions, building resilience, and continuing to move forward with confidence and purpose. I encourage women to seek knowledge, develop strong networks, advocate for their ideas, and remain committed to their goals. By approaching challenges with determination, creativity, and a solution-oriented mindset, they can create opportunities for themselves and contribute to meaningful change in their fields.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me most in both my work and personal life are using the privileges and opportunities I have to create a positive impact for others, while remaining grounded in integrity, compassion, and responsibility. I believe meaningful change comes from approaching challenges with diligence, conducting thorough and thoughtful research, and ensuring that the work I contribute is accurate, ethical, and driven by a commitment to serving others. I strive to lead with honesty and purpose, using my skills and resources to support solutions that benefit communities, protect the environment, and create a better future for all.
