Her Story

About Amanda

I graduated from Bloomsburg in 2013 and started my career at Vanguard in their change of ownership department, processing account transfers for death, divorce, and minors becoming of age. After three years, I moved to a private trust company where I worked on their mutual fund income team, paying out dividends and capital gains. An opportunity opened up in their anti-money laundering department on the wealth side, which intrigued me because I love crime shows and the forensic accounting aspect. I managed in the AML realm for five years, but I was losing motivation doing the same thing every day. I never really wanted to be a BSA officer or deputy officer, and I knew I eventually wanted to work one-on-one with clients. When this trust officer opportunity came about, I took it, and I absolutely love it. I work for a Delaware Chartered Trust Company now, managing relationships for about 300 high-net-worth clients. I work with their advisors, attorneys, CPAs, and family offices on setting up trust agreements, handling distributions, and acting as the liaison on behalf of the trust. This is what I needed in the next step of my career, and I will definitely retire as a trust officer because I just love it so much.

Ten minutes with Amanda

01What do you attribute your success to?

Honestly, the motivation comes from seeing too many people get too comfortable with either their career, where they go to work every day and they don't like it, or stuck in a relationship, and that's never been my mindset. I've always been a go-getter, and my family will tell you that. I'm not always chasing the money, but just chasing what makes me happy. I don't want to be miserable every day. Like, who wants to wake up miserable every single day? That's what motivates me - it's just my personal drive, and I think not everyone has that, but I think everyone should have that. You have nothing to lose, like, literally, what do you have to lose?

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Especially working in a male-dominated industry, don't let the pressure of that kind of industry reflect on what you want to get out of your career and life. Nobody's coming to save you. You only live once, literally. You gotta do what's the best for you, and life gets better. I'm living my best life. Don't be afraid to take the next step. I wish I could tell this to my friends, and they could listen to me. Like, you saw me come out of something, and literally just focus on the next chapter, and that next chapter is you. Don't let anyone else reflect your book.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

At the end of the day, when it comes to wealth planning and estate planning, who's left to take care of the wealth and estate planning? The women. Who takes care of everything? The woman. Typically, it's the women left taking care of it, which is why I think women in finance and insurance makes so much sense. You want a woman helping you with the empathy and relationship building. I think women are much better at the financial side of things, the insurance side of things. That's who I'm trusting - I want a woman to be doing that, because truthfully, as a woman, I know who really gets the stuff done.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I've always been a go-getter, and my family will tell you that. I'm not always chasing the money, but just chasing what makes me happy. I don't want to be miserable every day. I could have had a cushy life with my ex, but you only live once, literally. You gotta do what's the best for you, and life gets better. I went through a breakup of 7 years, and it literally is a second chapter. I'm living my best life now. Never settle - that's my motivation. I see too many people get too comfortable with either their career or stuck in a relationship, and that's never been my mindset. What do you have to lose? Focus on the next chapter, and that next chapter is you. Don't let anyone else reflect your book.
