SanDiego Community Living Services
La Mesa, CA 91942

Amanda Kotanen is a dedicated Community Facilitator at San Diego Community Living Services, where she supports individuals in achieving greater independence, inclusion, and quality of life. Known for her compassion, organization, and strong work ethic, Amanda brings both professional skill and personal empathy to her role. As a military spouse and mother, she understands the importance of resilience, adaptability, and community—values that shine through in her approach to helping others thrive.

Amanda is also the oldest of four children. She has two younger sisters and a younger brother and has always strived to be the best big sister she can be, showing her siblings that no matter what life throws at you, you can overcome it. In December 2024, Amanda almost gave up on her schooling after her father passed away; however, with the encouragement of her husband, Keenan, her children, siblings, and mother, she persevered and graduated with her degree. Amanda also believes her father is walking her through life from Heaven. Amanda fully believes that her father pushed her through the last of her degree.

Amanda also attributes who she is today to her upbringing and her being verbally abused by her birth father in her early teens. Amanda also faced more abuse by her first husband for almost 5 years. Amanda has overcome all the trauma, and while she continues to undergo therapy for the trauma and mental health issues, she strives to be the best she can be. Amanda overcomes every challenge she faces and uses them to shape how she will be in the future.

As a military wife, Amanda has learned to adapt and make a home with every move. Amanda's husband has been in the Navy for 13 years, and Amanda has been by his side for 10. In that time, Amanda has moved from San Diego, CA, to Hawaii and then back to San Diego. Amanda enjoys supporting her husband in his military career and serving as a resource for new military families.

In April of 2022, Amanda also donated a kidney to the husband of her son's teacher. Amanda loved the journey and is proud to say she helped someone by giving an organ. Amanda speaks of her journey and is always willing to answer questions about Kidney donation. Her professional journey reflects a steady commitment to service and growth.

Before joining San Diego Community Living Services, Amanda worked in customer service and senior living environments, gaining valuable experience in communication, administration, and care coordination. She has also developed expertise in project management and organizational leadership, holding a Certified Project Management Associate credential from the Management & Strategy Institute. Amanda graduated in August of 2025 with her Bachelor of Science in Correctional Program Support Services from the University of Phoenix, where she is a member of the National Honor Society for Collegiate Scholars and Zeta Mu Phi. Amanda is to start pursuing a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Southern New Hampshire University in November of 2025. Outside of her career, Amanda enjoys spending time with her family and exploring new opportunities for personal and professional development. She approaches every challenge with dedication, positivity, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work and determination, and to making a difference every day. I also attribute my success to having a single mother most of my life and watching her be independent while raising children and working full-time. My mom has been one of my biggest heros in my life.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to be a leader, give back to others, and help the underprivileged. I also say, never be afraid to take a risk and start something new, find the job you love, and keep going. Always be willing to expand your resume.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell young women entering my industry—don’t let anything stop you from achieving your goals. Push through those glass ceilings and never stop learning and dreaming. Never be afraid to take the leaps you need to break through the glass ceilings. Just because in many areas it is male-dominated, show you're worth and show them you are equal.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The most significant opportunity in my field right now is the chance to help more people and raise awareness that I’m here to assist them. Spreading the word that services are available to adults with disabilities. Letting others know you care and want to help them.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being detail-oriented and organized helps me stay focused and give my best in everything I do. Stay focused, be organized, and don't hesitate to take a mental break or a day off if needed. We are all human, and we need to ensure we can keep ourselves grounded.
