Ten minutes with Amanda
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my family and my upbringing. My grandparents and my parents both have been extremely influential on me, in shaping me to become the woman I am today, instilling in me strong values and work ethic, and providing me all the opportunities that I have been blessed to have such as receiving a strong education. My mom and my grandpa have been my biggest mentors and support systems, helping me out with career advice, but also being there for emotional support as well. They have gotten me through it all; celebrating the good times, being there in the hard times, and offering support both from a professional standpoint as well as from an emotional standpoint.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received would be to really find something that I'm passionate truly about, because that is going to drive your work quality and your work ethic. If my line of work or whatever it is that I am doing is something that I'm really passionate about and feel deeply about in my heart that is going to reflect the quality of my work and my work ethic.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Take the time that you need to discern whether this is a path that you really want to go down. A lot of people have the notion that being an attorney is glamorous. You hold this advanced degree, make a good living and live this heightened life style but that is far from the truth. This profession is a grind, it is a lot of work, it is long hours, it's very taxing, it's very emotional. I would say first to really, really take the time that they need in order to discern that this is their true passion, their true calling. And if it is, to just jump in and put the time in, put the work in, and keep at it, because it will pay off, it will all come together, but there's going to be some really, really hard days.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge I've faced is going out on my own and opening my own practice, which has come with a huge learning curve. Really learning how to balance everything - maintaining cases and still providing my clients with the quality of representation, as well as balancing just everything else that comes with owning your own business. That has really tested me and been a challenge, but also been something that's very fun and I'm working to overcome and succeed in. As for opportunities, I have just been extremely blessed with the people that I have met in my career. The people that have just been placed in my path, whether it be mentors, various experts, people to offer resources here and there. Making connections for purposes of clients and meeting people that just happen to need this or that, or know someone who has an issue that I can assist with. I've just been extremely blessed in being placed on the path to meet the people that I need to meet in order to be successful in my career.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are definitely honesty, integrity, and a hard work ethic. Especially in my practice, I try to value my clients, value their opinions, and take everything into consideration. I strive to be an advocate for them, be a voice for them, and be compassionate and understanding, as well as that be an advocate that they need in whatever legal issue that they're experiencing. Being able to provide that level of advocacy, understanding, and support is central to everything I do.
