Her Interview
Ten minutes with Amanda
01What do you attribute your success to?
I've had a lot of great mentors, really good leaders. I've respected and learned from every boss that I've had along the way and that's helped me. Learn from the people that you want to be like. I try to find "my people" in the field and ask A LOT of questions. In 2009 I worked with a team of 5 women that really shaped me into who I am today. Without them I am not sure where I'd be. I focus on continued education. I try to take a few additional education classes each year to stay current with the marketplace.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
You're never too important for the task at hand. Some days we solve the big problems and other days we solve the small ones.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think people are very quick to think things are beneath them. Sometimes you have to take on the entry-level job, we all have to start somewhere. You have to push yourself and figure out… you may have to start two pegs down, but at the end of the day there's always growth. I definitely would recommend finding the right mentors, finding people that can guide you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Currently it's trying to figure out AI. The pros and cons of the future.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Don't pretend you know what you don't know, it's ok to not know the answer. You may need to look something up; I think honesty is the best policy. Sometimes people want to cover their tracks. I'd just rather you tell me you messed up and we can figure it out. A mentor long ago told me, always humble yourself we are all human and we all make mistakes. The key is owning the mistake.
Work-life balance, definitely take breaks and use your PTO. Make sure you don't burn out.
