Her Story

About Amarachi

Amarachi Elendu holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and has built her career in the accounting and finance industry. She began with a contract role at Chemonics, then advanced to the ACOM group where she worked in accounts payable, and later joined BTST for full cycle accounting experience. Following a recent company restructuring and merger that eliminated her accounting department, she is pivoting toward creative pursuits involving cameras while continuing in finance. She was recently accepted into the MBA program at UMGC and will begin classes in the spring semester. Elendu attributes her success to recognizing positive outcomes in her work and viewing challenges as learning opportunities, recalling advice from a manager that everything in accounting comes down to debits and credits. She also volunteers through her church's Serve Day initiative, assisting with schools, senior homes, and support for houseless individuals in the DMV area.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Amarachi

01What do you attribute your success to?

My biggest driver is seeing success or something positive coming out of what I'm doing. If something clicks, I use that as a driver. I also see many things as learning opportunities and know that I can learn anything with patience. A manager once told me that everything in accounting is just debits and credits, which helped me tackle a big project.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Finance is very broad. In your senior year in high school or freshman year, find out what finance or accounting classes that you're good at. Try out as many things as possible. It's okay to pivot. Sometimes you might disappoint people, but make sure it makes sense and is beneficial to you and makes an impact to other people to avoid burnout.
