Her Interview

Ten minutes with Amber

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to persistence, adaptability, continuous education, and the guidance of strong mentors throughout my career. Healthcare compliance is an ever-changing field that requires professionals to stay current with evolving regulations, coding requirements, payer policies, and documentation standards. My ability to learn complex information, apply it effectively, and educate others has been a key factor in my professional growth. I also believe that having mentors who provide honest feedback, set high expectations, and offer encouragement during challenging moments is invaluable. Their support has helped me continue developing my skills, building confidence, and striving for excellence throughout my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received came from Jean Acevedo, one of the most influential mentors in my professional journey. Jean taught me the importance of setting high expectations, continuously striving for excellence, and believing in my own abilities while knowing that true mentorship means providing support along the way. Her balance of accountability, expertise, and encouragement has helped me build confidence, expand my knowledge, and continue growing as a healthcare compliance professional. Jean told me once, "I will push you, but I will never let you fall" and those words have stayed with me. I carry her lessons with me by challenging myself to improve, supporting others, and helping those around me succeed.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering healthcare compliance is to embrace the learning process and not become discouraged by the complexity of the profession. This field requires continuous education, adaptability, and a commitment to staying current with ever-changing regulations, but it becomes more manageable with patience, mentorship, and a strong support system. I encourage women to ask questions, seek guidance from experienced professionals, remain open to feedback, and recognize that no one begins their career knowing everything. Confidence is built over time through preparation, hands-on experience, and a willingness to continue learning and growing. By staying curious, dedicated, and resilient, women can build successful and rewarding careers in healthcare compliance.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest challenges in healthcare compliance today is keeping pace with the constant changes in federal and state regulations, including Medicare requirements, coding guidelines, documentation standards, and payer policies. This evolving landscape requires compliance professionals and healthcare providers to remain informed, adaptable, and committed to continuous learning. Artificial intelligence also presents both challenges and opportunities, as technology continues to transform healthcare operations. While automation may change certain aspects of the profession, I believe experienced compliance professionals will remain essential for interpreting regulations, understanding complex situations, identifying risks, and ensuring technology is applied accurately and responsibly. The greatest opportunities lie with professionals who combine healthcare expertise, regulatory knowledge, strong communication skills, and the ability to guide organizations through change while supporting compliance, efficiency, and quality patient care.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity, accuracy, accountability, education, compassion, and service. I believe healthcare compliance is about much more than policies, paperwork, and regulations because every decision involving documentation, coding, and reimbursement ultimately impacts patient care and an organization’s ability to serve its community. I am committed to approaching my work with honesty, attention to detail, and a dedication to helping others succeed. Outside of my professional life, I value spending time with my son, mentorship, and giving back to my community by creating positive opportunities for young people through my involvement in youth athletics. These values guide how I lead, support others, and make a meaningful impact in everything I do.
