Her Story

About Amber

I have been going to college for the past 7 years while being a single mom, which has given me an outlet to focus on myself and have something other than just the mom version of me. I graduated from George Northwestern Technical College with my Associates in Business Management and a specialization in Operations management. During that time, I achieved multiple certifications and awards in which in am so proud of. I am continuing my education journey at Kennesaw State University. I currently do a lot of community work. I volunteer with the local Community Church Ministry. In my own time, I enjoy helping, teaching, and assisting members of my community with basic resources in which they need and/or showing them how to get them locally. I have found in my community there’s a need to learn life skills in which they may not know or struggle with. My long term goal is to eventually have a non-profit because I don’t think there's enough locally that can help people with all life skills.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to integrity, patience, and empathy. Having all of that and utilizing it in moments that you really struggle in utilizing it not only helps you personally overcome what potential fears you may have, but it helps other people. My aunt told me when I was around 5, 'be you, don't let the world change you, the world needs more of it.’ So I think utilizing the empathy and the other attributes I find important is what has aided in my success. It's about being the good that you want in the world. The amount of support and love from those who believe in me including my children (biological and non-biological) even when I struggle to. God has truly blessed me with the wonderful individuals I have in my corner.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was from my first class I ever took, a skills class, where they asked, 'How do you want your obituary to look?' I have found that taking that time to think about when you're no longer here and what your memory's gonna be, and then striving and working hard to be that person to yourself, is so important. Because first and foremost, in order to have any kind of impact, you yourself have to walk with integrity. Everything you do has to be done with integrity, so being true to yourself, your goals, and who you want to be will lead the path to the most successful path you can take.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Know the power of silence and your voice. We still struggle to be heard, but most importantly, not just being heard, but knowing the power in silence when there's no reason to have to roar. The power in your own voice is what will get heard the most.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Right now, where I live, it's very hard to get into the workforce. I do believe, with my personal interactions, that ageism is real, and it's hard. Recruiters want the young and the ones who are gonna stay forever, but even just having the ability to have jobs, some of them, it's just hard. So, unless you're planning to go out there and make your own job, a lot of people struggle to find work.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, patience, empathy, dedication and motivation is really important for me. Having all of that and utilizing it in moments that you really struggle in utilizing it not only helps you personally overcome what potential fears you may have, but it helps other people. Be the good that you want in the world. I encourage women 'be you, and don't let the world change you,' the world needs more of it. So I think utilizing the empathy following my aunts advise as well as creating the me I wanted to be is what has aided in my success.
