Her Interview
Ten minutes with Amber
01What do you attribute your success to?
As the first person in my family to earn a Ph.D., my success stems from knowing when to ask for help, seek guidance, and find strong mentors who could guide and inspire me. I am deeply indebted to key influences in my life, including my academic mentor, Dr. Patricia Edwards, and my aunt, Bobby Meyer, who was an educator herself and provided me with constant encouragement throughout my journey.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
If you are passionate about entering the field of education, take the necessary time to truly master pedagogy. The short or fast-track certification routes are not always the best path, as thorough preparation directly impacts your ability to serve your students effectively. If you do take an alternative route, commit yourself to continuous learning. Always evaluate what your students need in the classroom, remain dedicated to refining your practice, and allow yourself to constantly evolve as an educator.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I believe in bringing my whole self to everything I do while prioritizing self-care so I have the energy required to meet others where they are. In both my professional and personal life, I strive to lead with empathy, compassion, inspiration, humor, and grace. Crucially, I also value accountability and owning my mistakes when they happen.
