Her Story

About Amber

Amber Mitchell serves as Talent Strategy Partner at Centrus Energy Corps, a role she began in early June. In this position, she works directly with hiring managers to post job openings, review resumes, schedule interviews, and prepare offers for candidates in the nuclear fuel industry. Prior to this, Mitchell spent six years in human resources and talent acquisition, primarily staffing for manufacturing and production sectors across the United States and Canada. She earned her bachelor's degree in business administration from Northern Kentucky University through an online program while working full time as a recruiter. As a single mother of two, Mitchell credits her success to true grit and a strong drive to achieve self-sufficiency, drawing inspiration from a lineage of strong, independent women. She values laid-back, open-minded work environments and the welcoming, tight-knit community at her current workplace. Mitchell notes the challenges of being a woman in male-dominated fields like nuclear and manufacturing but appreciates the support from many of her male colleagues.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Amber

01What do you attribute your success to?

Just true grit, never giving up on myself and my goals. I have two children that I have to take care of. I'm a single mom. There was a time that I was in a toxic relationship, and I did not want to be reliant on him and his income. So I knew I had a goal, and that there couldn't be anything in my way to stop me from achieving that. I wanted to be self-sufficient, be able to take care of myself and my children and kind of get out of that situation. I was just driven. I come from a long line of really strong, independent, driven women.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

To make sure that they equip themselves with a college degree. Not to let life get in their way, and not to stop. If I could tell my younger self, who literally didn't go off to college after high school, I would say just go to college, get a degree, get it over with. In today's age it's crucial to have a degree right now. Experience is really important, but pairing that with a degree is what sets you apart and it's gonna open doors.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Being a woman in a male-dominated industry like nuclear and manufacturing. You have to prove yourself, be one step ahead, enter a room or meeting and be on it every time. It can be challenging but most male counterparts have been fantastic. More and more women are applying, interviewing and getting offers.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Environments that are laid back and open-minded. The work culture at Centris Energy Corps is welcoming, happy, nice, with a tight-knit community where people connect and talk about life, not just work. I value being accepted, comfortable and welcomed in whatever scenario I'm in, having peace of mind and less stress.
