Her Story
About Aminat
Aminat Ibrahim is a dedicated biomedical engineering researcher and graduate student with a strong focus on heart implants and the hemocompatibility and biocompatibility of medical devices, as well as policies and regulations for their use. Currently pursuing her PhD in biomedical engineering at Cornell University since 2021 and wrapping up her studies, she works on developing next-generation, low-cost heart implants targeting young adults in developing countries. Her path began with an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, sparked by interest in heart diseases as a leading global cause of death, followed by brief industry work on materials for medical implants and devices. She holds a diploma in mechanical engineering and a master's in mechanical and biomedical engineering, plus numerous research certifications and trainings. Among her achievements, her research led to a licensed platform for heart implants by her institution, which she presented at the World Congress of Biomethics as the youngest student presenter. She serves as a fellow of the National Institute of Professional Engineers and Sciences and maintains memberships in the Biomedical Engineering Society, Graduate Women in Science, and American Society for Artificial Internal Organs. Outside her research, Aminat founded a non-profit organization to deliver healthcare solutions and STEM knowledge to communities in Africa, with a focus on emergency rooms. She previously served as founding president of the African Graduate Student Association at Cornell University for two years and organized the university's first African Global Summit, while also participating in the Graduate Women in Science Association and the Society for Women Engineers on campus. Her inspiration stems from a desire to save lives, reinforced by clinical observations during a summer immersion program and a memorable patient case in need of solutions.
