Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my family for always supporting me, as well as my mentor. I had such an amazing mentor that taught me everything that I know, and is still very supportive - I can still call her anytime I need anything. And I also want to give some credit to myself, to my hard work and never giving up. No matter what life throws at me, I always grew up to just keep trying, just keep getting up, no matter what. I actually got rejected a couple times when I first tried opening an agency. A lot of the carriers that I called said, well, you don't have enough experience, we want you to have more experience before you open your own agency. And I didn't take that, because I knew that what I learned in the three years is a lot. A lot of people wait 20 years to open their own agency because they are nervous to do it. They want to make sure that they know everything before they start. But with me, what I learned is, no matter what in insurance, you're always learning in it. So whether I start it now or I start 20 years from now, I'm always going to be learning in the industry, so I might as well learn while I have something that's my own.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I received is that it's only embarrassing if you're embarrassed. I've always heard that, and when I was younger, I could say that I was a little shy, and I would get scared of embarrassing myself. I've always heard, don't be embarrassed, you know? It's only embarrassing if you're embarrassed. Other people are not looking at what you're doing, they're worried about themselves. So you should also just worry about yourself instead of what other people are doing or thinking of you. That's where I got most of my confidence from, just keeping that in the back of my mind. So even if I make a mistake, I'm not embarrassed, I learn from it, and I do better next time.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say, don't overthink it, just go for it. Push yourself and be the best that you can be. This is definitely a more male-dominated industry. Most of my coworkers have always been male, yet I've always been the top sales agent at every place I've worked. And now I'm a female business owner. I have two females working for me that are doing absolutely amazing. Just don't let anyone hold you back. Don't worry about what other people say that you can do or can't do. If you think you can do it, then you should just go for it.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is hearing the word no. A lot of people that I've worked with, or I've seen, they have a hard time getting past the no, and they kind of get discouraged when they hear the word no, or I'm not interested. My biggest piece of advice when I'm training someone is always figure out why they're not interested. Maybe they had a bad experience with another sales agent, and that's why they don't want to give you a chance. So just working past that no is definitely the hardest thing, I would say.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important values to me are integrity and transparency. I think integrity is very important. Transparency is very important. I've worked with some people that aren't always truthful to the clients. Maybe they made a mistake, and instead of taking ownership, they blamed it on the company, or they blamed it on someone else. But I think transparency and having integrity are the two most important values in this industry. It makes you stand out, and when you tell the truth, people know when you're telling the truth, and they appreciate it when you tell them the truth.
