Her Story

About Amrita

I was born and grew up in Guyana, which is in South America, and then I moved to New York when I was young. Just being here and being able to have all of these opportunities available to me, things that I never had before, I'm just super grateful to soak it in and continue to perfect my craft and see how far I can go. I want to be a really positive role model for my son, who is 5 now. Before getting into real estate, I worked in the medical field in pharmacy. I have an associate's degree in occupational studies from that time. Coming from the medical field, it kind of takes a toll on you because no one comes to the doctor because they're happy. Everyone that's coming there has some kind of illness, and you have to really be able to transition emotionally and show them a happy face. After a while, it takes a toll on you emotionally where you're taking home that baggage. I empathize with people and feel their pain, even though I'm not going through it. I wanted to switch over into something where I was still helping people, but in a joyful way. I wanted to be able to help people reach certain milestones in their life, like buying their first home. You meet with somebody, you take them through that journey, and it's something happy, something big to celebrate. That just gave me more joy to do than what I was doing previously. I'm currently a licensed real estate agent in Florida and also obtained my mortgage loan originator license, though it's no longer active. I was thinking about exploring that field to see how I could marry the two, real estate and mortgages, but with my son and trying to find that balance between working and spending time with him, I decided not to pursue it. I'm proud that I was able to get my license for that just to be able to say I can do this, I completed it, I passed, even if it's just not for me right now. In the future, I would like to go back to school for a bachelor's in business administration. I see a lot of paths opening with that and how I can grow within my company and help them with their teams and managing. I think it's going to be a huge asset to my career to have that, so I'm hoping to get that started next year. My typical day involves a lot of one-on-ones with my team, training, coaching, getting new members up to speed, lots of builder meetings, communicating with our builders, running reports for them, presenting business plans every quarter, and assisting with lead nurturing, getting appointments and sales. It's a little bit of everything, half management and half sales. The goal is eventually to grow further into a higher leadership position.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work and never giving up. I'm just grateful for every opportunity that I've been able to have, because my family hasn't been able to go through these things. My mom was a single mom because my dad passed away when I was young. I really saw her work really hard and not be able to do the things that she likes because she was in survival mode, trying to give me everything. I just didn't want it to go to waste, right? So I try to embrace every opportunity and work hard. I just keep trying. Being here and being able to have all of these opportunities available to me, things that I never had before, I'm just super grateful to soak it in and continue to perfect my craft and see how far I can go. I want to be a really positive role model for my son.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received came from my husband, who always told me not to take an opportunity for the money or the pay, but for the experience of being able to learn something new and to grow and perfect in that craft. If you're not learning something, then it's probably not the right path for you. That's kind of how I look at things whenever I go to interview for a job, or when I'm thinking about changing departments or exploring other leadership opportunities. I ask myself, is this something for me to grow in?
