Is a healthcare leader and consultant with nearly 30 years of experience spanning clinical nursing, hospital leadership, and large-scale organizational transformation. Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she has worked across hospital systems at both the bedside and administrative levels, beginning her career in pediatric critical care nursing and progressively moving into patient safety, quality improvement, and healthcare operations leadership. Her early clinical experience provided a foundation for her later work in designing and implementing system-wide safety and reliability initiatives.

Since 2007, she has focused primarily on advancing patient safety culture, high reliability organizing, and clinical risk reduction across hospital, state, and national healthcare settings. Her work has centered on improving outcomes through stronger safety culture, process improvement, physician engagement, psychological safety, and high-performing interdisciplinary teams. She has led and supported initiatives that emphasize learning from failure, reducing system variation, and building reliable processes that support both patients and healthcare workers.

In her current role as a Senior Consultant in Safety and Reliability Consulting at Press Ganey, she partners with healthcare organizations to assess performance gaps, coach leadership teams, and implement culture change strategies that strengthen safety and patient experience. She also develops and delivers training programs focused on high reliability, operational excellence, and workforce engagement. Her professional approach emphasizes that sustainable improvement comes from aligning leadership behavior, system design, and frontline realities to reduce harm and improve the human experience in healthcare.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to curiosity and a desire to understand the many facets of healthcare rather than seeing it from a single perspective. I’ve also focused on building strong professional relationships, which has led to opportunities where others have thought of me and supported my growth. Throughout my career, I’ve actively sought out mentors—especially experienced women leaders—and learned from them closely, which has played a key role in my professional development.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I believe your passions often find you over time. Early in my nursing career, I never would have imagined the path I’m on today, but healthcare—especially nursing—is incredibly diverse, and there are so many directions you can take with that skill set. One of the most important things that has guided my journey is saying yes to opportunities, even those outside my immediate job description. I’ve tried to stay curious, lean into new experiences, and remain open to learning. That mindset has opened doors I never could have predicted and shaped a career far beyond what I once envisioned.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I really enjoy the consulting side of healthcare because it allows me to explore new nuances and emerging ideas, especially around innovation and how we can approach longstanding challenges differently. I’m particularly interested in asking questions like what else can we be doing, what haven’t we thought of, and how can we think outside the box. For example, issues like patient falls have been a persistent challenge in healthcare for years, and I’m motivated by the opportunity to work with teams that are rethinking traditional approaches and developing more innovative, effective ways to address them.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are curiosity, relationships, and mentorship, along with a strong commitment to continuous learning. I also place a high value on accountability and maintaining a focus on safety in everything I do. In addition, my faith is an important part of my life and guides how I show up for others and approach both personal and professional decisions.
