Her Story

About Amy

I started my career as a military spouse, spending my adult life following my Army colonel husband around the world and serving as a leader in military community spousal groups and Family Readiness Groups through multiple deployments after 9-11. Once my children were older and more independent, I entered the hospitality industry at Horseshoe Bay Resort, initially in the sales department as an admin. I quickly realized administrative work wasn't my strength - I'm an operator who loves being around people. My Director of Sales, Dawn Planke, encouraged me to transition to the spa, and I convinced the spa director to take a chance on me. I fell in love with the spa and wellness aspect, the people, the operations, and knew I had found where I needed to be. I progressed from spa manager to director, helping open the Milk and Honey location in Fort Worth where I hired all 80-plus employees and ran my first property as the head of the organization. I've since worked at the Mokara in San Antonio (a Forbes four-star property) and other luxury spas before landing at the Ritz-Carlton Dallas Uptown seven months ago. Throughout my career, I've specialized in luxury hospitality, Forbes standards, grand openings, team development, and creating comprehensive wellness programs. My greatest accomplishment is growing talent and helping team members progress in their careers, with several of my former assistants now serving as spa directors themselves.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say my biggest accomplishment and what drives my success is growing talent. I love having team members come alongside me and being able to help progress their career, help them grow and accomplish what I've done and what they're wanting to do. There's no bigger compliment than having someone under me who wants to grow and accomplish and just do great things in their career. I've had a handful of assistants who have moved on and grown and are now spa directors themselves. Nothing brings me more joy than when they text or call or I see them at a show and they're asking questions and need that guidance that I got from others. Getting to be that encourager and provide that insight and help push and grow them is incredibly rewarding.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It is a great industry to be a part of. It's very empowering. There's a great opportunity to influence and help grow other young ladies and women. You just need to be passionate, moral, ethical, and you'll be able to do great things if you're dependable and you set the example and put in the work. It's definitely work, but if you bring those qualities, you can accomplish amazing things in this field.
