Her Story

About Amy

Amy Geyer, Ph.D., MHA, DABR, serves as Chief of Physics at St. Luke's Cancer Institute in Boise, Idaho, a role she has held officially since 2023 after informally carrying out its responsibilities for several years prior. In this capacity, she leads the physics and dosimetry group across four clinical sites in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, and Fruitland, overseeing a team of physicists, dosimetrists, and support staff while managing equipment, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance to ensure the safe delivery of radiation therapy to cancer patients. Her path into medical physics was shaped by a deeply personal experience: her mother's battle with breast cancer during Geyer's high school years, which ultimately led her to build a career at the very institute where her mother was treated.

Geyer's academic foundation includes a bachelor's degree in nuclear sciences and engineering along with a master's and doctorate in medical physics, all earned at the University of Florida, followed by a two-year residency at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She later expanded her expertise into healthcare leadership by completing an executive master's in health administration at the University of Southern California. She is a longtime member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American Society for Radiation Oncology, and her academic excellence has been recognized through honors such as being named a 2026 "40 Gators Under 40" honoree by the University of Florida.

Beyond her clinical responsibilities, Geyer is committed to mentorship, community service, and organizational leadership, serving as a board member for the Comprehensive Cancer Alliance for Idaho. She credits her achievements to the mentors and supporters who guided her, particularly during her residency, where she learned the importance of doing what's right even in difficult circumstances. Guided by core values of integrity, empathy, and honesty, Geyer continues to champion continuous quality improvement, team development, and operational excellence within her department, while encouraging the next generation of women in STEM to pursue their ambitions with confidence and persistence.

Ten minutes with Amy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute much of my success to the people who believed in me and encouraged me along the way. The mentorship I received during my residency was pivotal—it taught me how to do the right thing even when it's hard, and what genuine hard work looks like. Determination and perseverance have also been key to getting me where I am today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've ever received is to ask questions, stay curious, and find a good mentor.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell young women entering this field that the sky is the limit, especially in STEM. With determination and perseverance, you can accomplish anything. Surround yourself with supportive people and mentors who will lift you up along the way.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is my strongest core value—doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Empathy allows me to understand the journeys of those around me, and honesty is essential, particularly in healthcare, where people's lives are entrusted to our decisions.
