Her Interview

Ten minutes with Amy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my unique background coming from a small family business, which gives me a perspective that I don't think anybody else in my area has. Because I understood marketing from a business owner's standpoint before I got into this industry, I'm more relatable to clients and I can better understand what their marketing dollars need to do for them. I think I offer just a different perspective that way. I also believe in being a high achiever - I try to structure my days very intentionally with presentations and prospecting, and I make sure to come back in-house at the end of each day to go through all the details so nothing gets missed. But more importantly, I want my clients to know that I care. I do want their campaigns to be successful, I do want it to be a long-term partnership, and I want them to know that I'm a resource for whatever they're doing, even if it's marketing that's outside of our scope. I think that genuine care and commitment to their success is what really sets me apart.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice Amy has ever received comes from her current General Manager, Allyson Hellman, who has served as a key mentor by guiding her professional development, strengthening her leadership skills, and supporting her continued growth within the company. Allyson is fearless because she has been in media and marketing for over 40 years. That longevity gives such great insights because there isn't anything she hasn't seen or heard. She has taught me to ask tough questions and seek answers, but most importantly to prioritize client needs so we all succeed.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think when you're starting off, you have to always keep in mind that it's about the customer, not about you. Go in with a mindset of learning about them instead of just talking about your products and services, because there's many people that handle marketing with similar products. When you take the time to really dive into what is going on in their industry, learn about that vertical, study it, so when you're talking to them you're not just coming in with a package or a schedule. You need to be able to customize marketing solutions for clients if you want them to stay with you long term. You have to educate yourself on your products/solutions so if something isn't performing as planned, then you need and be able to pivot. Be a bit more fearless, too. Women are so capable of multitasking, and we don't give ourselves enough credit. When you're in a marketing role, there are so many moving parts. I think of myself as a bit of a conductor in an orchestra. I'm the conductor, and I have all of these different campaign components and a team of people to help make the campaign run, so I need to be the guide for it all to work together seamlessly. Women can do that, and I think women should be more confident in those capabilities. I would strongly advise not to stay too comfortable. Keep challenging yourself, because you can grow, and you can do more.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

A major challenge in Amy’s field is standing out in an increasingly competitive and fast-changing media landscape where client attention is fragmented across many platforms. At the same time, this creates strong opportunities to deliver integrated, highly personalized marketing strategies that combine radio and digital channels to produce measurable, results-driven outcomes for clients. Because of Townsquare Media's digital capabilities, I run accurate and strategic digital campaigns anywhere in the country. That includes anything from websites with proven SEO strategies to the most granular targeted digital campaign. Most clients that have struggled in the digital space do not have a transparent marketing partner. Working with me and the team at Townsquare Media is a difference maker. We take the "guess work" out of ad campaign success with full transparent reporting and 24/7 dashboards. You will never feel lost in a digital landscape again, and wherever you live adding strong broadcast messaging to your digital ad campaign gives it a 20% lift! Radio and digital are the two strongest mediums across the country for reach, and combined they change the marketing game.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

In my work, I value genuine care for my clients and their success. The goal is to have a long-term partnership due to recommending the right strategy and executing the campaign as promised. I want to be a resource for whatever they're doing, even if it's marketing that's outside of our scope, because I want them to succeed. I also value continuous growth and challenging myself. I left my previous company after 12 years because I had gotten to the top and there really was nowhere for me to go. I'm the kind of person that needs to challenge myself and wants opportunities to grow. I didn't want to stay too comfortable, and I believe you can grow and you can do more. In my personal life, I have a home that's a little over 100 years old that's been like a passion project. I love working on it. I've turned into a little bit of a DIY person, I like to refinish furniture, and I'm constantly working on my house. I also love landscaping. My Mom, my almost 19 year old son, as well as my two rescue dogs are my heart and soul. Those projects, and my people, keep me very busy and grounded.
