Her Story

About Amy

Amy Reedy dedicated 19 years to her career as a registered nurse at Coliseum Hospital, where she worked in both the emergency room, including the trauma unit for 11 years, and the NIC unit. Her path into nursing began early, inspired by a desire to help others, leading her to graduate from Northside High School in 2000 with honors and a perfect 4.0 average. She earned a softball scholarship to Georgia Southwestern and completed an internship program at Emory lasting one and a half to two years before starting at the hospital. Throughout her career, Reedy balanced demanding shifts, often working overtime, while raising her daughter as a single mother. She has volunteered extensively with the Ronald McDonald Foundation, Rainbow House, Habitat for Humanity, and the Red Cross, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Zeta during college. Reedy's experiences, including overcoming personal health challenges, have deepened her empathy and understanding in patient care. She advises aspiring nurses to carefully consider the profession's demands, including long hours, pressure, and the need for hands-on experience, and suggests shadowing to confirm their interest.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell her to think long and hard about it, because it's long hours. The pay's not as great as people think it is, we're overworked and underpaid. You have a lot of crazy people that come in there. It's something different constantly. You have to be able to work well under pressure. School is hard. You have to work for free for a little while. You have to really want it. They can't be scared of blood or any kind of bodily injury. You have to be able to think on your feet fast because it's somebody's life in your hands. Try it out first by shadowing somebody.
