Her Story

About Amy

I have been with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the state's environmental agency, for 22 years. I started in various staff-level roles and have worked my way up through the agency in different capacities, including as a database person for our municipal solid waste department, a compliance assistance specialist, Water Master Section Manager, Water Rights Permitting Section Manager, Assistant Deputy Director for Water Quality Enforcement, and now as Deputy Director of Enforcement. My main area of expertise is environmental regulations and compliance with those regulations within the state of Texas. What I'm most proud of professionally is leading a division of over 100 people through substantial change and disruption, rehabilitating the workplace culture and making it a positive place to work where people want to work. I initially came to the agency because I was looking for a job and had some family history there, but now it's what I love. It's where I've become an expert, and I think I bring a lot of good to the environmental regulatory field within the state of Texas. I can't imagine going anywhere else.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Take a chance and step outside your comfort zone. I think we get used to staying where we're comfortable, and a few years ago, I was given the advice that it was time to spread my wings and fly, so to speak, and step outside my comfort zone, and it was the best decision I made.
