Her Story

About Amy J.

Amy J. Cubbison, LMFT, EMDR Trained, is a licensed marriage and family therapist dedicated to helping individuals, couples, and families heal, grow, and create more meaningful connections. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University San Marcos, Amy returned to graduate school later in life after her children became teenagers. She describes herself as a late bloomer who found the timing ideal, bringing with her the life experience, personal boundaries, and self-awareness that have become essential parts of her work as a therapist. Her own journey through therapy and personal growth inspired her to pursue a career focused on helping others discover healing and self-worth.

With approximately seven years of clinical experience, Amy specializes in trauma recovery, couples counseling, and emotional healing through approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and attachment-based therapy. She works with clients across a wide range of ages, including individuals, couples, and children, helping them process past experiences, improve communication, and build healthier relationships. Amy places a strong emphasis on reflective listening, validation, and authentic connection, especially in couples work. She has helped clients overcome deeply rooted trauma, including supporting a 9/11 survivor in eliminating recurring nightmares. Her approach is grounded in genuine care, consistent follow-up, and creating a safe environment where clients feel understood.

Beyond her clinical practice, Amy is passionate about lifelong learning, service, and authenticity. She believes therapists should also seek therapy themselves to continue processing their own experiences and maintain emotional wellness while supporting others. Her professional journey includes hospice volunteering, work with rehabilitation and family guidance programs, and being published in Chicken Soup for the Soul. Outside of therapy, Amy values time with her three children, personal reflection, writing, and giving back through community service. She encourages others to pursue their passions, protect their work-life balance, and remember that meaningful career changes and personal growth can happen at any stage of life.

Ten minutes with Amy J.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the genuine care I have for my clients. I believe they know that I truly care about them, and I strive to build authentic relationships based on trust and connection. I make it a priority to follow up, stay engaged, and ensure that my clients feel valued and supported.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to pursue what you’re passionate about, because that passion will help you succeed. I also believe it’s never too late to make a change. I went back to school later in my career, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to prioritize work-life balance. It’s important to take time to recharge and care for yourself. You have to fill your own cup before you can continue giving your best to others.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Authenticity is one of the values I hold most important. I believe in being honest with yourself, acknowledging your imperfections, and continuously working to become a better person. When you understand your own challenges and areas for growth, you are better able to show compassion and avoid projecting those struggles onto others.
