Her Story

About Ana Mihaela

Ana Mihaela Lucaci, MPH, is a transportation safety researcher, public health professional, and founder of Made2Walk, an organization dedicated to pedestrian safety, active transportation, and community engagement. With more than a decade of experience at the intersection of transportation planning, public health, and the built environment, she works to create safer, more accessible, and walkable communities. She currently serves as a Research Assistant at the Center for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety at the University of New Mexico School of Engineering, where she is pursuing a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a focus on transportation safety. Her professional journey reflects a commitment to understanding how roadway design, land use, and public policy influence the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.

As the Founder and Principal of Made2Walk, Ana leads transportation safety education, advocacy, consulting, and community engagement initiatives in collaboration with government agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, tribal nations, and nonprofit organizations. Her work includes conducting walk audits, organizing community events, developing pedestrian safety campaigns, and providing training to help communities improve walking and biking conditions. She also created the Pedestrian-Oriented Motorist Course to educate drivers about pedestrian safety and promote safer interactions among road users. Previously, Ana served as Director of Programs and Operations at Walk2Connect Cooperative, where she helped expand partnerships and fundraising efforts, tripling the organization's income within its first two years under her leadership. Her academic background includes a bachelor's degree in chemistry, a master's degree in European Studies, and a Master of Public Health (MPH), providing a multidisciplinary foundation for her work in transportation and public health.

Ana's dedication to pedestrian safety is also deeply personal. After being struck by a car while crossing a street, she developed a stronger commitment to advocating for safer walking environments and reducing preventable injuries. She believes meaningful progress begins with pursuing work that aligns with one's values, addressing community needs, and remaining determined to see projects through to completion. Inspired by her parents, who were the first in their family to attend college, Ana credits her persistence and determination as important contributors to her success. She encourages young women to follow their passions, seek mentorship, and use their voices to advocate for positive change. Through her research, education, and community partnerships, Ana continues to advance a vision of transportation systems that prioritize safety, accessibility, and the well-being of all road users.
