I would tell young women entering this industry to invest deeply in their skills and trust the value they bring. Mastery of terminology, ethics, and technique will open doors, but so will composure, empathy, and professionalism. This field demands accuracy under pressure, strong boundaries, and cultural fluency — and women who cultivate those strengths thrive. Build real relationships, keep learning, and take up space with confidence. Your voice, your neutrality, and your preparation are your power.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in interpreting today is the pressure to do more with less — faster cases, tighter schedules, and the expectation to be constantly available, especially with the rise of VRI. The volume can be overwhelming, and it’s easy for interpreters to feel stretched thin. But the truth is that in our field, quality always matters more than quantity. Accuracy, neutrality, and ethical decision‑making can’t be rushed, especially in legal, immigration, and medical settings where people’s lives and outcomes are directly affected.
The opportunity lies in prioritizing excellence over volume. Agencies, attorneys, and medical teams increasingly recognize the value of interpreters who deliver precise, high‑quality work rather than simply taking the most assignments. Interpreters who set clear boundaries, protect their focus, and invest in continuous training are the ones who stand out. As proceedings become more complex, there is a growing demand for professionals who can handle specialized terminology, maintain composure under pressure, and provide consistent, reliable interpretation.
