Ana Cecilia Mewa Martinez is a dynamic and dedicated educator with more than two decades of experience in language instruction, curriculum development, and educational leadership. With a strong foundation in foreign language education from the Instituto Universitario Rafael Escobar Lara in Venezuela and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from East Texas A&M University, Ana has consistently demonstrated a passion for empowering both students and fellow educators. She has designed and implemented a highly successful Spanish for Spanish Speakers program in middle school, helping students earn a 100% pass rate on the AP Spanish exam by 8th grade for over a decade. Currently serving as an AP Spanish teacher at John Paul II High School and an AP Reader for the College Board, Ana brings both academic rigor and cultural relevance to her classrooms.

Ana’s leadership extends beyond instruction. She has held roles as department chair, staff developer, ESL instructional coach, and team leader—supporting hiring processes, mentoring teachers, and fostering inclusive learning environments. Known for her collaborative spirit and strategic thinking, she bridges communication between administrators and educators, ensuring curriculum and classroom needs are met effectively. In addition to her work in the U.S., she has represented her home country of Venezuela as a cultural ambassador, promoting diversity and global understanding. A doctoral student and recipient of the Teacher of the Year award for 2023–2024, Ana continues to be a powerful advocate for transformative education and equity in the classroom.

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in education right now is maintaining effective classroom discipline without consistent administrative support, along with the ongoing struggle of limited resources due to insufficient funding.

Honesty, sincerity, and strong work ethics are the values I hold most important in both my professional and personal life.
