Ten minutes with R.
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to an unwavering curiosity, resilience in the face of challenges, and a deep commitment to turning ideas into meaningful solutions. Embracing every obstacle as an opportunity to learn, adapt, and innovate has been central to my growth. I have also been fortunate to collaborate with brilliant mentors, colleagues, and peers who broaden my perspective and inspire creativity. Ultimately, my success stems from a combination of perseverance, a passion for science and sustainability, and the determination to translate knowledge into real-world impact that benefits communities and the environment.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is that every obstacle is an opportunity in disguise. Challenges are not setbacks but chances to adapt, learn, and grow. Approaching each situation with curiosity, flexibility, and a positive perspective has shown me that resilience and creativity are essential for meaningful progress. By embracing uncertainty, being open to new approaches, and seeing difficulties as opportunities to learn and innovate, I have been able to transform complex problems into impactful solutions, continuous growth, and lasting contributions in my field.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be open to new opportunities and embrace the unknown with curiosity and confidence. Don’t be afraid to explore different paths, take risks, and step outside your comfort zone—some of the most exciting experiences and growth come from the unexpected. Stay adaptable, follow your passions, and view challenges as chances to learn and innovate. The journey may be full of twists and turns, but each step brings valuable lessons and opportunities to make a meaningful impact.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is balancing innovation with sustainability on a global scale. Developing new materials and technologies that reduce food waste, improve safety, and minimize environmental impact requires interdisciplinary collaboration, rigorous research, and practical scalability. At the same time, this challenge presents an incredible opportunity: to redefine how we produce, package, and consume food in ways that are environmentally responsible and socially equitable. Advances in biodegradable materials, antimicrobial technologies, and circular economy solutions offer the potential to create real-world impact, bridging scientific innovation with sustainable practices that benefit communities and the planet.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are purpose, integrity, curiosity, and service to the greater good. I am driven by the belief that the work we do should create meaningful, lasting impact—not only advancing science and innovation, but also benefiting people, communities, and the planet. I strive to ensure that my work contributes to solutions that are sustainable, inclusive, and accessible, where progress is measured by real-world outcomes and shared benefit.
I also value resilience, adaptability, and lifelong learning. Growth often comes from navigating uncertainty, and I believe staying open, flexible, and curious allows us to evolve and respond thoughtfully to complex global challenges. Collaboration and empathy are equally central to my values; meaningful progress happens when diverse perspectives come together with mutual respect and shared purpose.
Giving back through mentorship, education, and community-centered initiatives is a responsibility I take seriously. I believe that knowledge is most powerful when it is shared, and that success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities for others. Ultimately, I am guided by a commitment to doing work that matters—work that strengthens communities, supports sustainability, and contributes to a better, more equitable future for all.
