01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my personal drive but also to the support of those in my corner. My parents were my first supporters pushing the importance of education and reminding me to never give up on my dreams. Not only were my parents my final foster home, but my forever home. They supported me through the early years of school navigating the supports available to manage my auditory learning disability, but also helping me stride past the doctors and professionals that doubted I would be where I am today. My sister has also been one of my longest supporters cheering me through the ups and downs of childhood to adulthood. She has seen me through the good and the bad and is truly one of my best friends. My husband has been my supporter for 10+ years now. Together we have built a family and are focused on raising our daughters to be strong independent young women. Through our life together we have navigated being a parental team, loss of a child, and building the family we have both always wanted. I am so grateful that my supporters are in my corner as I build my career and practice to support others.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received was from my supervisor who reminded me that I cannot support others without supporting myself first. This is the best advice I have received because as a healer and supporter of others, I often put myself on the back burner to give to others. This advice from my supervisor was needed in a moment where I just needed to remember without me, the tool for my profession, I can not support the clients that walk into my office looking for care.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The advice I would give to a young women entering the mental health field would be find your people. This profession can be very isolating and finding people you can lean on for support, can share ideas, get consultation, but most importantly have people that will remind you of your importance is needed.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges in the mental health field right now is navigating insurance companies. The biggest opportunities right now is unfortunately the mental health crisis right now meaning calendars do fill up quickly.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me come from Colossians 3:12 which focuses on compassion, kindness, humility, and patience. I strive to show compassion, kindness, humility, and patience with all clients I work with as well in everyday life personally. I believe to be the best me I need to be the most available to all the people, personally and professional that walk into my life.
