Andrea (Andrea Howard) Oliver, Ph D

Founder & Executive Director
EduPowerment
Crawfordville, FL 32327

Dr. Andrea Oliver is a dedicated educator, historian, and scholar whose career reflects a deep commitment to transforming lives through the power of education. Although she initially envisioned a future in law or political journalism after earning her bachelor’s degree in communication from Florida State University, her path shifted during her undergraduate years after volunteering at an underserved middle school in Tallahassee. That experience sparked a passion for working with young people and led her to pursue a master’s degree in social science education, followed by a doctorate in American history—both from the same institution. What began as an unexpected detour became a lifelong calling rooted in purpose and impact.

Early in her career, Dr. Oliver spent several years teaching and serving as a local administrator for programs supporting at-risk youth, where she developed a strong foundation in student-centered learning and community engagement. She later transitioned into higher education and has spent over two decades as a faculty member at Tallahassee State College, where she teaches American and African American history. Known for her dynamic teaching style and responsiveness to student needs, she creates engaging classroom experiences while also contributing to scholarly research. Her work has earned national recognition, including a 2018 excellence award from National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development, and she was honored as a community exemplar in her college’s 2023 Black History calendar.

Dr. Oliver’s research centers on amplifying underrepresented voices, particularly through her current book project exploring the lived experiences of African American student leaders in newly integrated Southern schools during the post–civil rights era. Taking a microhistorical approach, she focuses on personal narratives rather than broad institutional accounts, bringing nuance and humanity to historical scholarship. Beyond the classroom, she is the founder of EduPowerment, an initiative focused on professional development and financial literacy, and remains committed to empowering individuals through education, storytelling, and informed action.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success first and foremost to God, who remains the center of my journey and the source of my strength. On a practical, day-to-day level, I maintain a mindset of gratitude; approaching challenges with a thankful heart keeps my perspective clear and my motivation high.

I also recognize that I do not reach these milestones alone. My success is deeply rooted in the unwavering support of my family, particularly my husband and children. Their encouragement provides the emotional foundation that allows me to pursue my professional goals with peace of mind.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most impactful advice I ever received came from a former dean who emphasized the necessity of maintaining balance. In a field centered on service, it is incredibly easy to become so consumed by the lives and needs of your students that you begin to sacrifice your own family or exceed your natural human limits.

He taught me that setting firm boundaries is not a sign of weakness, but a requirement for longevity. I’ve learned to be mindful of that delicate equilibrium, ensuring that my service to my students never comes at the expense of my primary obligations to my home life.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to embrace your ambition: it is perfectly okay to want it all. However, it is vital to understand that "having it all" doesn't always mean having it all at the same time. There is a season for everything.

Be prepared to strategically backburner certain professional opportunities when your family or caregiving responsibilities require your presence. Most importantly, give yourself grace when "life be lifing." Success is a marathon, and allowing yourself the flexibility to prioritize your personal well-being during intense seasons will ultimately make you a more resilient professional.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The greatest challenge I see today is the increasing difficulty of finding a sustainable rhythm in a world that demands constant availability. We are often pressured to be "always on," which can quickly lead to burnout if we aren't vigilant. However, this challenge has birthed a significant opportunity: the growing institutional and cultural shift toward valuing mental well-being and boundary-setting. We are finally having honest conversations about human limits, which allows us to restructure our workflows to be more inclusive of our personal lives.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My core values are centered on faith, family, and intentionality. In both my professional and personal life, I strive to act with a spirit of service, ensuring that my work is an extension of my commitment to God and my community. I believe that success is only meaningful if it is pursued with integrity and a clear sense of purpose.
