Her Story

About Andrea

Andrea K. Papson is a New York-based contemporary abstract artist and founder of A.K. Papson Artworks. A first-generation Polish and Ukrainian American, Andrea creates work shaped by a lifetime of movement — one informed by cultural heritage, the performing arts, a dynamic career in healthcare, motherhood, and the spaces we live in.

Andrea has been creating art since childhood, with early pieces that were embraced and continue to live in homes today. Her early creative life also included years as a cellist, dancer, and athlete – experiences that continue to inform the rhythm, flow, and energy within her work.

Before turning fully toward art, Andrea spent nearly two decades in healthcare, with much of her clinical career centered on physical therapy, sports, and performing artists. Her work later expanded into healthcare operations and leadership, deepening her understanding of how people move, heal, and respond to the spaces around them.

Throughout each chapter of her life, Andrea continued painting — first as a lifelong creative practice, then as a way to shape the feeling of the spaces around her, and eventually for others. Her work grew from a desire to create sophisticated artwork that could transform the feeling of a room. Drawing inspiration from movement, natural forms, and thoughtfully designed interiors, her paintings explore the balance between fluidity and intention, softness and strength, organic movement and refined composition.

Working primarily with acrylic paints and inks, textures, and luminous gold leaf, Andrea creates layered abstract paintings with depth, contrast, and presence. Some works carry a soft, floral sensibility, while others lean into bold, modern abstraction with striking contrast and dimensional texture. Across a range of scales — from intimate works to large statement pieces — her paintings are designed to bring beauty, life, and emotional presence into the spaces where people live, work, gather, and heal.

Ten minutes with Andrea

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to evolve. I have never followed a perfectly linear path, but every chapter of my life—from healthcare and leadership to motherhood, the performing arts, and now my work as an artist—has taught me something that continues to shape who I am.

I also believe strongly in discipline and consistency. Creativity may be intuitive, but building a meaningful career requires showing up, continuing to learn, taking risks, and being willing to move beyond what feels comfortable. Some of the most important opportunities in my life have come from trusting my instincts and having the courage to pursue a new direction.

Above all, I attribute my success to staying connected to purpose. Whether I was working in healthcare or creating artwork, I have always been most fulfilled when my work has the ability to positively affect how people feel, experience a space, or connect with something meaningful.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is that your path does not have to be linear to be meaningful or successful—and it is never too late to pivot. Every experience builds something in you, even when you cannot yet see how it will connect to what comes next.

Some of the most important chapters of my career began when I was willing to step outside of what was familiar, trust the skills and experience I had built, and take a chance on a new direction. I’ve learned that growth often requires the courage to change course, and that sometimes the most rewarding opportunities come when you give yourself permission to begin again.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be bold, trust your instincts, and do not apologize for taking up space. As women, we are often conditioned to soften our voices, qualify our opinions, or make ourselves smaller in order to be accepted. I would encourage young women to resist that instinct.

Know your value, speak with confidence, ask for what you deserve, and do not be afraid to be ambitious. You can be thoughtful, collaborative, and kind without diminishing your own authority. There is strength in owning who you are, what you bring to the table, and the perspective you offer as a woman.

Most importantly, do not wait for permission to pursue the opportunities you want. Be willing to take risks, advocate for yourself, and step into rooms before you feel completely ready. Confidence is often built by doing the thing first.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Authenticity, integrity, and communication are at the center of both my work and my personal life. I believe there is real strength in knowing who you are, staying grounded in your values, and resisting the pressure to become who others expect you to be.

I also place tremendous value on clear, honest communication. Whether in business, collaboration, or personal relationships, I believe people thrive when they feel heard, respected, and understood. Thoughtful communication builds trust, creates stronger connections, and often prevents small misunderstandings from becoming larger ones.

Ultimately, I try to move through both my work and my life with confidence, empathy, and consistency—staying true to myself while remaining open, respectful, and connected to the people around me.
