Her Interview

Ten minutes with Andrea

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to always being open to new opportunities and always trying to be that helpful person. One of the most challenging times in my career was when my boss just walked out one day, and I had to take over all of his responsibilities without any training. I had to figure out how to do all of his work on a very time-sensitive manner. Even though I was working a lot - I was working 13 hours, working weekends - to be able to make things happen during this time, I still made time to make sure that the other departments that had to collaborate with me were taken care of. I tried to make it as efficient for them as possible, and for myself. That relationship has just been so strong that now when I need a favor, they're more willing to do that, and we just have a really great relationship. So I always say yes to new opportunities, be on the advisory boards, be on the decisioning groups at your company, and always look out for folks that you can help out. Be the one person that helps someone.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

When I was an intern, my boss told me to make sure I spend time making all of my responsibilities as efficient as possible, because your job is always going to get harder, and you're always going to get more on your plate, and no one is ever going to try to make your job easier. That advice was very well-intentioned, but I just didn't like that pessimistic view of no one's going to try to make your job easier. So I took the advice - make your job as efficient as possible - but I flipped it and decided to be the one person who tries to make someone else's job a little easier. Me taking that time to do that for other people has created such good relationships that has opened doors for me. And now I'm the Senior Manager of Insights and Business Intelligence for North America, and it's because of those collaborations and looking out for other people that got me there.
