Her Interview
Ten minutes with Aneka
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to purpose, resilience, and the courage to create opportunities. After beginning my career in healthcare, I transitioned into the insurance industry to gain greater flexibility for my family while making a broader impact in my community. For more than a decade, I have helped individuals and families protect their financial futures, eventually building my own path by opening a Farmers Insurance agency in Central Texas. As one of the few African American women in the industry in my region when I started, I faced challenges with determination and turned them into motivation. Today, I am passionate about educating my community through financial literacy, outreach programs, and meaningful client relationships. My success is driven by hard work, continuous learning, and a commitment to empowering others to make informed financial decisions and build stronger futures.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received was that I could spend my career building someone else’s dream, or I could take the opportunity to build my own destination. That perspective changed the way I viewed my potential and inspired me to move beyond simply working in the industry to becoming a business owner. It reminded me that lasting success begins with believing in my own vision, taking calculated risks, and having the courage to create a path aligned with my goals and purpose.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to develop a strong work ethic, stay persistent, and believe in their own abilities. Technical skills can be learned, but integrity, consistency, and a genuine commitment to serving others are what truly set successful professionals apart. In industries where women may face unique challenges, it is important to trust your expertise, remain confident in your value, and never allow someone else’s perception to define what you are capable of achieving.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The insurance industry offers tremendous opportunities for women to become trusted advisors, business owners, and community leaders. While I have faced the challenge of building credibility as one of the few African American women in my market, I have also seen the industry become more open to diverse perspectives and leadership styles. I believe that by embracing entrepreneurship, committing to continuous learning, and focusing on education rather than simply sales, women can create meaningful impact—helping families build financial confidence while opening doors for greater economic opportunities in their communities.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my work and personal life are compassion, authenticity, grace, and service. My background in healthcare taught me the importance of approaching every person with empathy, understanding that everyone has a unique story and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. These values continue to shape how I serve my clients, mentor others, and lead my business. As a mother, my motivation comes from creating greater opportunities for my son while building a legacy of entrepreneurship and financial independence. I also believe that self-care is essential to long-term success, which is why I prioritize wellness, reflection, and personal growth. By staying grounded in my values, I am able to lead with clarity, compassion, and purpose every day.
