What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received came from several plant managers early in my career who really took me under their wing. They taught me not to back down, don't give up, and don't take things personally - which was crucial as a woman in a male-dominated field. But beyond that resilience advice, they also emphasized the importance of attention to detail and really learning the whole facility, not just the environmental permits. They showed me how to understand how the operation works and how environmental compliance and operations interact with each other, so you can balance staying in compliance while also making product and making money. That holistic understanding of how everything works together has been invaluable throughout my career.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't take anything too personal. That was one thing I learned from day one - if you take it too personal, it just runs you down. You just gotta keep going and move past it. When I was starting out in this male-dominated field, a lot of people would question me, like 'what's this little girl gonna know that I already don't know,' and I had to prove myself. I didn't just stay in an office - I got involved and forced them to accept me and bring me along. I would tell them 'no, I want to come' even when they said I didn't have to. Once I did that and they got to know me and understand what I knew, they were fine with me. So my advice is don't back down, get out there, show what you know, and don't let anyone make you feel like you don't belong.
