Her Story

About Angela

Angela McCarty is an accomplished educational leadership consultant, strategist, and founder of What’s Next, LLC, where she helps leaders and organizations transform vision into intentional, sustainable action. With more than two decades of experience in education, nonprofit leadership, workforce development, and organizational strategy, she has built a career rooted in systems thinking, relationship-centered leadership, and accountability. Based in the Greater Milwaukee area, Angela partners with school systems, nonprofits, and mission-driven organizations to strengthen leadership capacity, align organizational values with decision-making, and create emotionally healthy environments where both adults and children can thrive. Her philosophy is grounded in the belief that “people don’t experience your intentions; they experience your decisions,” a principle that shapes her coaching, facilitation, and consulting work. Angela’s journey in education began while she was still a high school student participating in a work-release program that allowed her to teach classes and explore the profession firsthand. Inspired by both the educators who positively shaped her life and those who failed to create supportive learning spaces, she committed herself to becoming the kind of leader who ensures every child feels seen, valued, and capable of success. Over the years, she progressed from classroom educator to executive leadership roles, including serving with Milwaukee Public Schools, Racine Unified School District, and Urban Learning Collaborative. In 2023, she transitioned fully into consulting through What’s Next, LLC, where she now coaches school and district leaders, facilitates professional learning, supports parents through storytelling and mindfulness practices, and guides organizations through strategic planning, systems alignment, and capacity building. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Angela is deeply committed to wellness, reflection, and sustainable leadership. Through her initiative Calm Within, she develops mindfulness tools and guided experiences designed to help caregivers, educators, and leaders reconnect with themselves while navigating demanding roles. Her leadership style blends strategic rigor with authenticity, humor, and compassion, making her both approachable and impactful. A proud wife of 12 years, Angela describes her husband as “the calm to her storm” and treasures family experiences that include traveling, exploring different cultures, spending time near the water, and enjoying game nights with loved ones. She is also a proud mother of two daughters, Destiny, a decorated track athlete, and Lauren, a talented young athlete, and entrepreneur. Angela takes pride not only in their accomplishments, but also in the opportunity to grow alongside them through every stage of life. Recognized as one of Milwaukee’s influential women for 2026, Angela continues to inspire leaders and communities through her commitment to growth, healing, and purposeful change.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Angela

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute much of my success to being intentional in both my work and my relationships. I believe relationships matter, and I’ve never been someone who enjoys purely transactional connections. I am purposeful about building genuine relationships rooted in trust, honesty, and mutual value. Even in situations where a relationship is transactional by nature, I believe in being clear and transparent about that from the beginning.

A large part of the work I do involves coaching, leadership, and helping people navigate challenges, and that can only happen when people feel safe, seen, and comfortable enough to open up. I’ve always had the ability to make people feel heard and supported, and I think that has allowed me to build strong partnerships and create meaningful impact.

I also attribute my success to being highly data-driven and strategic. I believe in looking beyond surface-level issues to identify root causes, measure progress, and determine when it’s necessary to pivot. Data helps guide decision-making, keeps goals achievable, and ensures that the work being done is actually producing meaningful outcomes, not just good intentions.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received was to stop shrinking in rooms I was already qualified to be in. Early on, I spent a lot of time overexplaining, second-guessing myself, or feeling like I needed to prove my value before speaking with confidence. Someone told me, “Your experience, perspective, and presence already belong in the room. Walk like it.”

That advice changed the way I lead, communicate, and build. It reminded me that confidence is not arrogance, it’s clarity. People respond to certainty, especially when you’re asking them to trust your vision, your strategy, or your leadership. I’ve learned that when you combine confidence with preparation, authenticity, and results, you stop chasing validation and start creating impact.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The advice I would give to young women entering this industry is to avoid becoming too comfortable in only one perspective, one environment, or one type of relationship. Growth happens when you are willing to step into spaces that stretch you.

Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned did not come from formal titles or traditional professional settings. They came from engaging with different communities, building relationships with a variety of people, and being open to experiences outside of my normal environment. Those experiences gave me a broader perspective, and that perspective made me a stronger coach and leader.

When you work with people, especially in leadership, coaching, or education, you cannot effectively support others if you are only able to see the world through your own lens. Stay curious. Build genuine relationships. Be willing to learn from people whose experiences look different from yours. The more open you are to growth, the more effective and impactful you become.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is visibility. There are many talented consultants, coaches, and small business leaders doing meaningful work, but if people don’t know you exist, they can’t access the support you provide. As a small business owner, you quickly learn that expertise alone is not enough, you also have to consistently build awareness, relationships, and trust within the community.

At the same time, I think one of the greatest opportunities in this field is that people are craving authenticity and genuine connection more than ever before. They don’t just want someone with credentials; they want someone who can truly listen, understand their challenges, and help them navigate solutions in a meaningful way.

I’ve learned that while visibility may open the door, relationships are what sustain the work. Once people engage with me and experience the way I approach coaching, strategy, and support, building trust tends to happen naturally. The challenge is making sure people know we’re here and understand the value we bring.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me, both personally and professionally, are family, intentionality, and connectedness. Family is my foundation. It shapes how I lead, how I show up in relationships, and ultimately why I do the work that I do. My experiences as a woman, wife, mother, and leader have all been deeply influenced by the people closest to me, and that has taught me the importance of creating balance, presence, and stability in both work and life.

Intentionality is another core value that guides me. I believe the way we speak, lead, love, and support others should be purposeful. When you are intentional about your actions, your outcomes begin to align more closely with your values. Whether I’m parenting my children, supporting my husband, or working with clients, I try to move with care, clarity, and intention.

I also deeply value connectedness and community. I believe people thrive when they feel supported, seen, and genuinely connected to others. So much of the pain people experience is made heavier when they feel isolated. I try to create spaces and relationships where people feel safe, valued, and like they truly belong. To me, that sense of connection is one of the most powerful things we can offer one another.
