Her Story

About Angela

I've been in the healthcare field for over 30 years, and it's been quite a journey. I started very young as a single mother with two kids, and I needed something that would work with my life - that Monday through Friday, 9-to-5 schedule. So I jumped into office work in healthcare, doing phones, filing, scheduling appointments, learning medical terminology. It was just basic office work at first, but it gave me what I needed. As my kids got older, I expanded my skills and even went to school to get my paralegal degree. Then I got back into healthcare, got married, moved around, and have been doing this ever since. For the past 5 years, I've been working from home for a health insurance company as a member service representative. It's customer service - helping members understand their benefits, navigate claims, and figure out how things process. Healthcare is always changing, so it's about learning to navigate the different rules and laws that change constantly and just going with the punches. I'm the type of person who learns independently, figures things out on my own, and asks for help when needed. I'm a quick learner - show me something once or twice and I've got it. What I've learned most is the importance of having compassion and putting yourself in your members' shoes, understanding that people could be going through something significant, and just helping them get the answers they need.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say, you know, I hope you have thick skin and you can't take anything to heart, and you definitely can't take anything seriously, because times have changed so much, and people have changed so much. In the healthcare field, people can be not nice - they're looking for help and answers, and a lot of times they're not always very friendly about the way they go about asking for those things. People can be very mean and not very nice, so I would make sure you don't take anything to heart, and you definitely have understanding and have compassion, for sure.
