Ten minutes with Angelica
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to maintaining a clear focus on my goals while leading with empathy, respect, and compassion. I believe in treating everyone with dignity, putting myself in others’ shoes, and communicating openly and honestly. Speaking up when something isn’t right and building strong, respectful relationships have been essential to both my personal and professional growth.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to pursue opportunities with confidence and follow your heart, especially if medicine is truly your calling. Be assertive, don’t be afraid to knock on doors, and stay persistent. The opportunities you seek—and the people you meet along the way—can open doors you never expected.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges is balancing the growing business pressures of healthcare while maintaining patient-centered care. The profession has also faced the lasting emotional impact of the pandemic, misinformation, workforce shortages, and stigma surrounding specialties such as spinal cord injury care. At the same time, there are tremendous opportunities to advance interdisciplinary care, mentor future healthcare professionals, and take on leadership and educational roles that help shape the future of medicine.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me most are compassion, respect, human connection, and clear communication. I believe in treating every person with kindness and dignity while fostering meaningful relationships with patients, colleagues, and learners. I’m also passionate about teaching and mentoring, and I hope to leave a lasting legacy by helping prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.
