Q

What do you attribute your success to?

When you come from underserved populations, you learn that the only way to achieve your goals is through education. So, part of my success is due to my commitment to educate myself and continue learning throughout my professional life. Education is key to success. In addition, finding and building community. A community that sees you and that fully supports your aspirations as a professional has been a key factor for my personal success.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've received is if you see barriers coming your way, do not give up. You have to find a way to break those barriers and continue and fulfill whatever dream you have. Always believe in yourself and don't feel bad if people don't recognize your work. You are your best advocate, so go ahead and clap for yourself.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would really encourage continuing education and personal development for the new generation. Always be learning something new - every skill is important. Personal development equips you with professional skills and provides leadership opportunities.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In education, sometimes it's really hard to achieve what you want to achieve if you don't have the resources available to support students. You learn to maximize what you have to achieve the goals.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Empathy is the most important value for me. I strongly believe that building positive relationships with the community you serve is powerful and it really impacts peoples' lives. Treat people the way you'd like to be treated, it's that simple.
