Angeline Gonzalez

YALI Network Social Media and Content Manager
U.S. Department of State
Arlington, VA 22204

Angeline Gonzalez is an international communications professional specializing in digital engagement, strategic storytelling, and cross-cultural collaboration. Based in Arlington, Virginia, she currently serves as the YALI Network Social Media and Content Manager at the U.S. Department of State. In this role, she leads the development of multi-platform communication strategies, including video, podcasts, blogs, and social media campaigns, to engage more than 600,000 members of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Network across the African continent. Her work supports U.S. Africa policy priorities while strengthening connections between emerging African leaders, institutions, and global partners through thoughtful, culturally relevant content and data-driven outreach.

Gonzalez’s path into communications evolved organically. After graduating from Norwich University with a degree in International Studies and Spanish, she began her career as a Program Coordinator at Howard University for the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Graduate Fellowship Program, which prepares outstanding students to become diplomats for the United States. When a communications role became available, she pursued the opportunity, drawing on her personal interest in graphic design and social media. She quickly discovered a passion for strategic communications, leading efforts to develop digital platforms, produce newsletters and promotional content, and build relationships with diplomats, academics, and media partners to strengthen program visibility and engagement.

Through her work with the YALI Network, Gonzalez has seen firsthand the powerful role that social media can play in shaping narratives and amplifying voices around the world. Beyond analytics and digital metrics, she focuses on using storytelling to highlight the impact of young African leaders who are working to uplift their communities and drive meaningful change. By sharing these stories and fostering engagement across cultures, Gonzalez continues to build a career centered on public diplomacy, global connection, and the belief that communications can be a catalyst for positive social impact.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I have to give it to Jesus I'm not even lying. There are times where you feel alone, there are times where you think you're not going to be able to do it, where you think the preparation that you have, the knowledge that you have is not enough. You always ask yourself, why me? Why would someone pick me? But when you go into the Word of God, one of my favorite verses is Romans 8:28 that says if you love God, everything will work out. I want to clarify - a lot of people think that believing in God is just like, oh well, I just believe in God and God is going to give me everything. No, the work is still there, the long hours are still there, the effort, the grit is still there. But knowing that there's a higher power above you that is rooting for you - I always say no one else is going to be on Angeline's team, no one else is going to believe in me the way God believes in me. If he's believing in me, then I got this. If he wants good things for me, then I got this. I can't give the credit to nobody else, because when no one was there, he was there. That word was there, those words of encouragement from his word were there. When I feel like I can't no more, I go into prayer, I listen to my worship music, I sing my heart out, and then I feel a little bit better, and then I'm like, you know what, maybe I overreacted, I can do this.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The biggest thing is prepare yourself, and then trust the preparation that you've got, that you've given yourself. Social media is always going to be new because social media is always changing. Communications is always changing. The way we communicate, the way that technology advances always changes. So if you're continuously preparing yourself, make sure that you trust yourself with the preparation that you have, because you will walk into spaces and meet with people that have a certain way of doing things. They're accustomed to do things traditionally, and people are scared of change, people are scared of trying new things. So you have to trust yourself that you know what you're talking about, so you can influence the people in the room. Because if you're not confident of what you're prepared for, then you're not going to be able to portray that forward. And that's just for anything, that's in everything, not only for social media or communications. Trust the preparation that you have. Trust that when you walk into a room, you know what you're talking about in order to tell your director, your supervisor, or a head, like hey, this is what works, and this is what we need to do, and you need to have that confidence in order to say that so you can get the result that you're looking for.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Discipline is really important for me. Persistence. And grace - having a little bit of grace. I remember when I was living by myself and I wanted to do 25,000 things at the same time. I'm very strong in my faith - I'm a very strong God-believer, and part of my social media content that I do personally is that I like to motivate the youth and anybody that's willing to listen about the things of God, but not only about the things of God, but also about preparation. I like teaching people what no one taught me. I like helping people in areas where no one helped me, or even if someone helped me, I want to help them. I'm really big on mentorship, so I'm hoping to shift my content into mentorship for people entering into their careers, because you never know what someone's going through, you never know if they've got the education, if they've got the guidance, if they have someone in their corner helping them out. So if you're able to provide some guidance to someone that's going to help them in their life or in their current situation, why not provide that? Today you might feel like you're able to give 100%, but tomorrow you only may be able to give 50%. Give yourself a little bit of grace. The fact that you're still able to move forward, the fact that you're able to still do even a little, you're moving forward, you're doing something. Especially here in the United States, we're always going quickly, we're always going fast, we're always going at 100 miles per hour, we forget to give ourselves a little bit of grace. We forget to congratulate ourselves, we forget to tell ourselves, like hey, you're doing what you gotta do, you're doing great, good on you, relax, breathe, you're doing good. I'm a strong believer that if you don't take care of yourself, no one's gonna take care of you. I don't care if you got the best husband in the world, the best kids in the world - you need to take care of yourself. You need to pour into yourself. You need to make sure that you're good, so you can make sure that the people that you love and the things around you are well taken care of.
