Her Story
About Angelique
My background started around 1999 or 2000 as an executive assistant in the private equity world, serving as the gatekeeper and right hand to a gentleman at a private equity firm. That's where I really cut my teeth - I call it the College of Harvard for executive assistants because everything was about time is money and money is time, with no room for error in such a fast-paced environment. They were a great bunch of guys, smart but tough, and that's why they're so successful today. One day my boss asked me to find a T&E software, and that's how I landed upon Concur when it had just started. I was there during the implementation rollout, and throughout all my subsequent jobs at companies like Motorola in telecom and a health organization, I've been a user and administrator, gaining a wealth of knowledge over the years. I got SAP certified as a configurator, and I've been in my current position for almost 6 years now. I realized early on that expenses are everywhere - in your personal life and business - so this was a solid niche for the foreseeable future because it's only going to expand and get more digitized. What drives me is being very detail-oriented, focused, and career-driven, with a strong professional work ethic that I carry out every day. I'm big on loyalty, discernment, and going the extra mile - if I'm going to put my name on something, it has to be right. I live by Michael Jordan's quote that I keep on my desk: 'Don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid not to try.' I won't know unless I try, right?

Ten minutes with Angelique
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to being very detail-oriented, focused, and career-driven. Balance is very important to me - I believe in working hard and playing harder. I'm one of those individuals who goes the extra mile, and if I'm going to put my name on something, it has to be right. I have a very strong professional work ethic that I carry with me every day in whatever job I'm in, and I make sure to carry out my duties professionally. That commitment to excellence and attention to detail has been the foundation of everything I've achieved.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is that if something is true to your heart, or if you're intuitive about it in a very positive manner, just go for it. Just go all out and go for it. I live by a Michael Jordan quote that I keep on my desk - it's on a little silver heavyweight that I've had for many years: 'Don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid not to try.' That quote reminds me daily that I won't know unless I try. It's such a positive message that keeps me moving forward and taking chances in my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You have to be very attentive and pay close attention to details. As far as the SAP world, they've been out there for a very long time, and I know there are other products out there, but I believe they've created a niche for themselves that makes them very successful in what they can provide to customers. It's one of those careers that you can go very, very far with, and it's also a career where individuals tend to stay for a very long time - there's real longevity in it. So my advice is just go for it. It's something that will always definitely be out there, and companies in this space remain on the learning curve as far as T&E management goes. It's a solid career path with staying power.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges are the employees who don't necessarily like change. They're sort of used to the historical ways of working with Excel worksheets, and convincing them to convert over to SAP can be challenging. I know a lot of companies have made the transition, but there are still a handful that do it the historical and antiquated way. It's a little bit challenging, but once I convince them that everything is technology-driven now and that the days of dropping an Excel worksheet on your boss's desk are over - that it can all be done online via the app where they can approve things easily - I'm very good at enticing them to jump on board. That's probably the most challenging part of my work right now.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I'm big on loyalty - I'm a true believer in it. Discernment is very important to me, and I'm very detail-oriented in everything I do. I like teaching and helping others learn, and I'm empathetic in my approach. I believe in working hard and playing harder - that balance is crucial. I have a very strong professional work ethic, and that's important to me in whatever job I'm in. I carry out my duties professionally every day, and that commitment to professionalism is a core value that guides both my work and personal life.
