Her Story
About Angie
Angie Colon is a Senior Technical Delivery Manager at United Wholesale Mortgage, bringing more than two decades of experience in technology leadership, primarily within the financial technology and mortgage industries. Her path into the field was unconventional: she started out as a customer service representative at a small startup, where a growing fascination with software development led her to teach herself the discipline from the ground up. That determination opened doors into business analysis and product management, setting the stage for a career built on continuous learning and an ability to turn ambiguity into structure.
Over the course of her career, Angie steadily rose through progressively senior roles, spending more than a decade at Rocket Mortgage advancing from Business Analyst to Director of Software Engineering, before taking on the role of Director of Engineering at Equity Prime Mortgage and later joining UWM in her current capacity. Across these roles, she has guided enterprise-scale initiatives on platforms handling hundreds of billions of dollars in transaction volume, developing product operating models, governance frameworks, and AI-driven delivery programs that help organizations translate strategic vision into practical execution. She is currently furthering her expertise through an Executive MBA at the University of Cumbria.
Known for grounding her leadership in tenacity, integrity, and authenticity, Angie has earned recognition including the Technology Rising Star award from the Women of Color STEM Conference and a feature as an Influential Woman representing South Lyon, Michigan. She is an active member of organizations such as AnitaB and the Michigan Council of Women in Technology, and she remains committed to mentoring the next generation of women in technology, encouraging them to build confidence, embrace curiosity, and recognize that uncertainty is simply part of growth. Outside of her professional life, she values the time spent with her family, finding fulfillment in travel and everyday moments shared with those she loves.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Angie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to tenacity. My setbacks are what pushed me forward rather than holding me back — every time I fell down, it fueled my determination to keep fighting for more. The people who doubted my abilities became an unexpected source of motivation, and the fear of failure, of becoming just another statistic, kept me driven to prove what was possible.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The most valuable lesson I've learned is that every woman in this industry benefits from having both male and female mentors and advocates in her corner. Leaders like Mel Finley and Teresa Nguyen showed me how to remain composed under pressure and lead with a balance of accountability and compassion. John Eldridge, in particular, has been a mentor, colleague, and advocate across multiple chapters of my career — he championed my abilities in rooms where I wasn't present and helped me see leadership potential in myself before I recognized it. That experience taught me that having allies who will speak up for you truly matters.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is simple: none of us truly have it all figured out. Even after 20 years in this industry, professionals who appear to have complete confidence and clarity are often navigating the same uncertainty as everyone else. Don't let self-doubt hold you back — the person next to you is likely feeling it too. Build your confidence, never be afraid to put yourself forward, seek out new opportunities, and commit to continuously learning and absorbing as much as you can.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I see the rapidly evolving technology landscape, particularly around artificial intelligence and digital transformation, as both a significant challenge and an extraordinary opportunity. The real opportunity lies in helping organizations move beyond simply adopting new technology toward building sustainable operating models that empower people and improve collaboration. Navigating ambiguity and leading large-scale transformation require resilience and strong leadership, but I view these challenges as catalysts for growth — chances to create clarity and design solutions that deliver lasting value.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Ethics and integrity are at the core of everything I do — I believe wholeheartedly in doing the right thing, even when it's difficult, and I try to see beyond the surface to recognize potential in people and situations. Being genuine and authentic has always paid off for me, both professionally and personally. Outside of work, my family comes first — as a wife, mother of three, and stepmother, I treasure the time spent creating memories with the people I love, whether during summers in Michigan or while traveling to new places with my husband.
