About Angie
Angie Schaal is Chief Executive Officer of A Plus Educational Consulting. With 25 years in the field, she partners with schools nationally and internationally to embed the science of reading and science of learning into classroom practice through administrator walkthroughs, lesson modeling, teacher observation and feedback, and explicit training. Her path began as a teacher, moved into school administration, and included work with the state of Ohio before she founded her consulting practice to support systemic improvements in literacy outcomes. She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education for grades 1 through 8, a master's degree in reading, a specialist degree in administration and curriculum, and an educational specialist degree after completing doctoral coursework in literacy and curriculum. She is also a trained LETRS facilitator. Schaal serves as board treasurer for the Northern Ohio branch of the International Dyslexia Association and participates in National Decoding Dyslexia initiatives, driven by her commitment to ensuring every child learns to read regardless of background.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I think my a lot of it is that I have this deep passion for making sure that all kids learn, no matter where they are, no matter who their teachers are, no matter where their families live. You know, I just it is so embedded into who I am. So, and I think that we do that by supporting the people around them, and that really is their teachers and their school personnel.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Say yes. You know, when I got my first teaching position, I never imagined I was going to be interested in reading or teaching kids to read the way I am. ... just sometimes just say yes. Explore those opportunities that you never expected you would want. Because they really can lead you into pretty dynamic places.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
When you're sitting at the table and you're not heard, you have to keep speaking up. You know, don't be silenced. By others at the table or others in the room, because what you bring is a fresh perspective, you know, a dynamic perspective, and something that matters. ... as women, we continue to speak up, we continue to push for what's best... Keep speaking up. And just don't be silenced.
