Her Story
About Anita
Anita Porter serves as a store manager at PECO, a pet store in the retail industry on Cape Cod, where she has worked for four years after starting in sales. Her daily responsibilities include arriving early to open the store, caring for a variety of animals ranging from fish to reptiles, managing inventory and product distribution amid market fluctuations, and leading employees to ensure excellent customer service. Porter earned an Associates in Accounting from Newberry College in 1993 and has completed online coursework in Psychology through the University of Phoenix, though her formal education is unrelated to her current role. She has overcome challenges by advocating for client and animal needs, sometimes going beyond standard boundaries, and she advises young professionals to start small, ask questions, and not fear going against the grain to achieve growth. Outside her primary role, Porter has volunteered with Barking Area Multi-Service since its creation in 2007 or 2008, assisting children with mental and physical disabilities.

Ten minutes with Anita
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Never be afraid to go against the grain. Because sometimes you have to fight for what you believe. Even if others don't always see your way, sometimes you just have to show them.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Never be afraid to ask questions. You're never gonna get the answers that you expect, or sometimes an answer. It's a lot, you know, it's so simple. But you never realize to ask the question.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Challenges include dealing with distributing and market fluctuations. Opportunities come from starting small, like as an intern or cashier, leading to immense growth such as becoming a store manager in 4 years.
