Her Interview
Ten minutes with Anjana
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute much of my success to my ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively while staying committed to the people and causes that matter to me. Throughout my career and community involvement, one of the most common compliments I receive is, 'How do you manage it all?'
By profession, I work full-time in IT during the week, while dedicating my weekends to event planning and community service. I am actively involved with the Hindu Temple, the India Association of Kansas City, Visit KC, and the Asian American Chamber of Commerce. I also volunteer for charitable initiatives, support local pet shelters, organize donation drives, and make time for family, friends, and social gatherings.
What I've learned is that success isn't about doing one thing exceptionally well—it's about balancing priorities, staying organized, and showing up consistently for the commitments you make. The ability to manage diverse responsibilities without losing sight of relationships and community has become one of my greatest strengths. In fact, it inspired the name of my company, 'We Manage Better.' It reflects my belief that with the right planning, organization, and dedication, it's possible to create meaningful impact across both professional and personal spheres.
For me, success is not measured by how busy I am, but by how effectively I can balance my career, community involvement, service, and personal connections while continuing to grow and help others along the way.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I received actually came as a compliment. People would often tell me, 'You manage everything so well.' Over time, I realized that effective management—of time, priorities, relationships, and commitments—is a skill that can make all the difference in a career. That feedback became a personal philosophy and even inspired the name of my company, We Manage Better. It reminds me every day that success isn't just about achieving goals; it's about creating systems and habits that allow you to consistently show up for your work, your community, and the people who depend on you.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Believe in yourself above everything else. Confidence in your own judgment and instincts is essential. Don’t wait for validation or rely on others to open doors for you—if you want something, trust yourself enough to take the first step. Opportunities rarely come fully prepared or handed to you; you have to actively create and pursue them. There will always be challenges, but growth comes from pushing through those moments rather than waiting for the perfect timing or perfect support system.
I often tell my own child the same thing—don’t wait for opportunity to arrive, and don’t hesitate when you see a path forward. Once you take that first step, things often begin to align in ways you didn’t expect. The key is to start, trust your instincts, and keep moving forward with conviction.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest opportunities—and early challenges—in my field has been building credibility as a woman-led entrepreneur in event planning and coordination. In my IT career, I’ve been fortunate to work in collaborative environments where communication and teamwork come naturally to me, and I’ve never faced significant challenges in that space.
However, in my business, especially in the early years, it was challenging to establish trust and demonstrate the scale of what I could deliver. There is often an assumption that a single individual, particularly a woman, may not be able to manage large-scale events or complex coordination. It took time and consistent delivery over the past several years to break that perception and build confidence in my work.
Over time, that challenge turned into an opportunity. It strengthened my belief in myself and helped me grow a business that is now rooted in execution, trust, and word-of-mouth credibility. What makes this work especially meaningful is the emotional impact behind it—creating environments for weddings and celebrations where families build lifelong memories. Years later, when they look back at those moments and relive the joy, I feel that the work we did helped shape that experience. That combination of overcoming perception challenges and creating meaningful emotional impact is what continues to motivate me every day and keeps me committed to both my professional career and my entrepreneurial journey.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me in both my work and personal life are commitment, reliability, and making a meaningful impact on others. I strongly believe that if you take responsibility for a task, it should be completed with integrity and within the promised timeframe. Being dependable is something I take very seriously, whether it is in my professional role or community work. Community service is a significant part of my life, and it has deeply shaped my perspective. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to various local initiatives and events.
One experience that has stayed with me was during COVID, when we organized donations for an organization supporting children affected by domestic abuse. When we visited them, hearing their stories and seeing their emotions made me realize the true impact of small efforts. The gratitude and unexpected joy they expressed for things we may take for granted was incredibly humbling and reinforced my belief in the importance of community support.
Another value that drives me is empowerment—helping others believe in their own potential. I’ve noticed that confidence is contagious; when you approach people with positivity and self-assurance, it often inspires them to see what they are capable of as well. It is very fulfilling when people tell me that my journey encourages them to take their own first steps.
Ultimately, what motivates me is the ability to create both reliability in my work and a positive impact in my community, while helping others feel more confident and empowered in their own paths
