Her Story
About Ann
Ann LoBosco created a brand new CTE program that is all her own and has brought her knowledge and creativity to a new school this year to explore this new chapter in her life. She teaches education from an educational perspective on top of developing her program work, hoping to reach students, to instill passion in the field, and create a network with others in education of all levels. Ann went to college at Concordia, where she took classes thinking administration might be her path but realized it was not, pivoting to becoming an academic (English) teacher. She is a constant learner who taught herself much of the technology used in schools, along with earning her WBLC Certificate and her CTE Education License recently. She enjoys sharing knowledge to help students recognize their strengths and prepare for their futures, and works toward success in everything she jumps into for her profession and hopes to collaborate in order to expand the program and students opportunity, as well as her own professional career.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Ann
01What do you attribute your success to?
I have 100% determination do to the right thing, and have been taught that success comes with hard work, integrity, open and honest communication and with collaboration and team work, anything is possible. Whatever one produces that they can be proud of and know that they have accomplished on their own two feet is one of the things in life that no one can take away from you.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Do what is right, be fair, be honest and nothing you do in your life will ever be a waste of time. Even if something doesn't work out the way you expected, or someone doesn't agree, you still have a great foundation to start from or find a new environment to continue.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Keep at it! Whatever "it" is, that is something you can be proud of once you have accomplished it. When you put in your grit, determination, time and have pecked away at developing it, stand tall that you didn't give up. Sometimes you may have to pivot, find a new environment, walk through brick walls (that is what sledge and jack hammers are for), or find a new platform, but don't give up on the foundation and your dreams.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There is such a shortage of people going into the education field. There are only 4 high schools in NY and I don't think there are any or many across the nation that have an established program. To boot, across the nation, only 4 colleges have that same premise of a true foundation and exporation for students, especially since the field is more than just being a teacher, and you add in the government not recognizing we need incentives for good and new people, there is a challenge to get butts in the seats.
However, being such a new program, I am hoping to get the driven students who want to explore, have an opportunity to experience different job shadowing and internship opportunities within the field, and gain a good foundational knowledge so they don't waste a lot of money going into college and not knowing.
As another opportunity, being the program curriculum will be at the state for approval very soon, having students graduate and go right into being a teaching assistant once they graduate is the plan and having articulation agreements, and/or dual enrollment with local and neighboring colleges, will help students pay for their post-secondary opportunities, by having discounted college credits and/or tuition .
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
By far honesty and integrity; take ownership of whatever you do, and do the right thing, when it may be the hardest thing to do. Humor is also important; we need to be light-hearted and laughter can heal and solve a lot of hearache or disappointmens which can be fleeting; life has no manual, and it can be a wicked roller-coaster ride, but if we can find laughter and fun in what we have, we can find a way to ride out the bad.
