What do you attribute your success to?
I have been surrounded by ambitious women my entire life, from family members and friends to neighbors, teachers, and colleagues. These relationships inspire me to work hard and strive to achieve my full potential. I would not be who I am today without these influences and their support.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
"Mistakes are OK. That's how we learn. But patterns of mistakes can be a problem."
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Never hesitate to reach out for more information, especially over the phone. The worst thing someone can say is no, and that rarely happens.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Burnout, most likely from becoming a one-man band and not being compensated fairly for that output. I've witnessed it being the editor's job to source content, write content, manage the editorial calendar, proofread/copy edit content through the pipeline, manage the relationship with the printer, manage the social media calendar, create social media content, manage the email calendar, write emails, manage website content, conduct content performance audits, travel for industry events, manage public relations efforts, proofread all written copy, serve as the copywriter, help with branding and marketing projects, oversee interns, etc. That's too much for one person. It's worth it to take your time finding the role and organization that is the right fit, has values that align with you personally and professionally, and values their employees. Always look at the turnover rates before committing!
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty and consistency
