Her Story

About Anna

Anna Sothen is a local media publisher based in Moseley, Virginia, where she leads two hyper-local community magazines, Neighbors of Magnolia Green & Foxcreek and Swift Creek Living, under Best Version Media. She stepped into the publishing world in April 2021 and launched her first magazine that September, following a deliberate career pivot away from her previous work as a health coach, yoga instructor, and Reiki practitioner. Known for positioning herself as a connector, and often described as a "human rolodex," Anna spends her days meeting with local business owners, assessing their visibility needs, and determining how a publishing partnership might help them thrive within their neighborhoods.

Anna earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with a minor in Spanish from Old Dominion University, and she later completed her Health Coach Certification through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, along with training as a certified 200RYT yoga instructor and Reiki master. This blend of wellness expertise and relationship-driven marketing has shaped her "giver's gain" approach to business, one centered on connecting people to the right resources, even when she isn't the direct solution herself. Her work extends beyond print, as she is also active in her community through radio and podcast appearances that amplify the local businesses she partners with.

Beyond her publishing work, Anna serves as president of her BNI chapter and as a BNI director, sits on the Chesterfield Chamber Board, and is a board member of her homeowners association. She has been honored with Best Version Media's Presidential Award for three consecutive years, a reflection of her dedication to her craft. Anna is equally committed to giving back, volunteering with To End the Stigma to raise awareness around fentanyl poisoning and supporting the 5756 Foundation through food pantry runs and back-to-school drives. Grounded by the support of her family and her ongoing love of yoga, she continues to champion the businesses and neighbors who make her community feel like home.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Anna

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the support of my husband, the mentorship of experienced leaders who have guided me along the way, and my willingness to pivot and keep learning. My professional journey, from health coach and yoga instructor to publisher, along with my involvement in various boards and organizations and my volunteer work, has shaped who I am today, and a strong network built on a referral mindset continues to drive my growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've ever received is to always keep educating myself and learning.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I'd tell them that they can build a rewarding and successful career in this field.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge I see is that many local businesses need greater exposure and improved brand recognition and visibility. At the same time, this is where the opportunity lies, community publishing and curated networks can bridge that gap by connecting businesses to the right partners and audiences.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Generosity, community connection, and mentorship are central to how I work and live. I value sharing my professional journey, from health coaching and yoga instruction to publishing, along with my commitment to business development, board service, continued education, and volunteer work. Family and personal wellness matter deeply to me as well, and I make time for the things I love, like yoga and time at the beach.
