Lisa Loop

Lisa Loop is a novelist, poet, and essayist whose work explores the intersection of memory, identity, and the human condition. With an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of California, Riverside, and a background in both film and creative coaching, Lisa brings a cinematic and emotionally resonant quality to her storytelling. Her writing has been featured in publications such as NBC.com/THINK, The Coachella Review, Ballast, and Gunpowder Press. She is the author of five books, including her latest novel States of Matter, and has also published under the pen name Thora Wolf.

Before turning to writing full-time, Lisa worked as a Hollywood creative executive and story consultant, leveraging her deep understanding of narrative structure and character development. In addition to her writing, she’s a certified Co-Active life coach, supporting creatives in unlocking their potential. Lisa is also the founder of the long-running Monday Morning Writing Workshop, a nonprofit community committed to developing original work. Originally from Seattle, she now lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their elderly Aussie Shepherd mix.

What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to embracing a growth mindset—especially learning to meet my inner critic with compassion—which has given me the courage to take risks, the resilience to recover from failure, and the freedom to keep moving forward through uncertainty.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to give myself the carrot, not the stick—because self-compassion fuels sustainable motivation far better than self-criticism ever could.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be open to different methods of getting your voice out there. This publishing industry is dynamic, and your path in it will be unique to you.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Readers love books more than ever, which is great news. However, finding the right reader is challening in a very crowded marketplace.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Self-compassion, which is key to taking risks, and authenticity, which leads to the best outcomes in the long term.
