Stabb earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Liberal Studies from Widener University. Before her current role, she worked for approximately 15 years in higher education, advising international students on visas at Widener University and the University of Miami.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Anne

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my current success to my family, who have always been in my corner, along with my friends and an open-minded, trusting, and supportive owner of Wild Birds Unlimited, Glen Mills, PA, who allowed me to grow and pursue my passions, such as birding programs and writing my book. They all believed in me and supported everything I wanted to do.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Let your values not your job title decide your next move.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

You have to have real passion for it, and real dedication. You can't go into something like this half-heartedly... the environment is just too big. And the earlier and younger children become interested and involved with nature, the more it becomes part of who they are.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges:

  1. Habitat loss and fragmentation
  2. Climate change
  3. Declining insect and pollinator populations
  4. Light and noise pollution
  5. Invasive species
  6. Pesticides and chemical use

Learning and Teaching Opportunities:

  1. Native plant landscaping
  2. Reducing pesticide/herbicide use
  3. Bird-safe building measures
  4. Community science programs
  5. Protecting local green spaces
  6. Education and mentorship programs
  7. Reducing single-use plastics and litter

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Loyalty and love for family: being present for my kids, grandkids, and extended family

Being a cycle breaker: consciously choosing differently from patterns I inherited

Resilience and strength: showing up for myself even when things have been hard

Purpose and creative drive: the author, a go-getter wanting to build and finish things, not just talk about them

Authenticity: becoming who I actually am, not who circumstances shaped me to be
