Her Story

About Anne

Anne Truran is an education leader, multilingual learner advocate, and Founder and Chief Language Officer of Together, Language, a consulting and professional development company she established in 2018. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Anne brings extensive experience as a bilingual classroom teacher, English Language Learner (ELL) teacher and coordinator, assistant school leader, and school administrator. She began her career in education in 2009 through Teach for America, teaching in bilingual and monolingual settings in Texas before relocating to St. Louis in 2015. Her experiences working directly with multilingual students and families shaped her commitment to creating more equitable, welcoming, and accessible school environments.

Through Together, Language, Anne provides workshops, courses, coaching, and consulting to help schools strengthen multilingual family communication and integrate language access into whole-school systems. Her work focuses on helping English Learner coordinators and educators move beyond isolated language-support departments and take shared responsibility for ensuring multilingual students and families are seen, valued, and supported. She also developed Spanish for Relationship-Building, a practical course designed specifically for school professionals who want to use Spanish to build authentic relationships with students and families. Her approach emphasizes belonging, culturally responsive practice, equitable communication, and practical language skills that educators can immediately apply in their daily interactions.

Anne's professional philosophy is grounded in relationships, reflection, and the belief that belonging should come before academic or language objectives. She has been recognized for her contributions to education, including Teacher of the Year honors at both the campus and district levels during the 2010–2011 school year, as well as additional awards for her language-access work. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies from Georgetown University and is proficient in Spanish and Portuguese. Beyond her professional work, Anne is also involved in community and environmental advocacy through 350 STL. Her career reflects a sustained commitment to helping educators understand multilingual experiences and transforming schools into communities where language and culture are treated as strengths rather than barriers.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to overcoming perfectionism, building lasting relationships with students and families, and learning from supportive mentors like Daniela Guardiola.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to view trial and error as part of teaching rather than as failure. — Daniela Guardiola

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to not let perfect be the enemy of good. Take your skills seriously, trust that your expertise can meet market needs, and stay persistent—success will follow.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I see a major opportunity for schools to become more effective and joyful by embracing multilingual learners and families as a shared community responsibility. Key challenges include certification pathways, teacher training, and staffing models that still silo multilingual education within specialist departments.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are open-heartedness, community, and reflection. I strive to approach others with empathy, build meaningful connections, and continuously learn from my experiences.
