Her Story
About Annette
I started everything when working for the City of Miami Homeless Assistance Program with the homeless community. Learning their stories and struggles with mental health and substance use drove me to become a licensed counselor. I was already receiving my bachelor's in psychology from Florida International University while working full-time. That led me to a graduate program for counseling education with a clinical mental health counseling track. I did my internship at one of the shelters and got a position there after graduation. I worked there for a little over a year and a half helping with addiction programs. I also worked briefly as a school counselor but realized it wasn't my niche. Now I work in the collaborative care model at a medical center, which I love, and I'm considering opening my own practice while focusing on maternal mental health and postpartum care.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
When something scares you, don't allow that fear to hinder you. Use it as a weapon to grow. If it's uncomfortable, it's a sign there's an opportunity for growth. I've thrived in fear and it has been a wake-up call for me to push through and make a difference.
