Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, humility, and a commitment to hands-on learning. I’ve found that real-world experience is often more valuable than formal education—especially in the logistics industry. My leadership approach, which emphasizes empathy, clear communication, and treating team members as people first, has also been a key factor.

Over more than twenty years in shipping and logistics, I’ve specialized in overseeing cargo operations between the U.S., the Caribbean islands, Central, and South America—ensuring smooth transportation processes, accurate invoicing, and efficient team coordination. What began as a career transition from teaching mathematics in Cuba has grown into a lifelong passion, driven by the complexity, pace, and global connectivity of maritime trade.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received came from my mentors—former supervisors and colleagues—who taught me the importance of consistency and emotional intelligence in leadership. One piece of advice that has always stayed with me is: “You can’t control the ocean, but you can control how you steer the ship.” That mindset continues to guide my approach to leadership through every challenge.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Annia encourages young women entering the shipping and logistics industry to stay open-minded, keep learning, and never shy away from challenges. She reminds them that leadership requires balance—listening, staying patient, and showing kindness while maintaining authority. Her advice: “Be firm when you need to be, but always lead with heart.”

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Annia identifies tariffs, evolving trade regulations, and communication barriers as ongoing challenges in the logistics industry. However, she also sees opportunities in technology-driven shipping systems and in the growing demand for female leadership within this traditionally male-dominated field. She believes that continuous learning and cultural understanding will define the next generation of logistics professionals.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Respect, empathy, discipline, and responsibility guide both Annia’s professional and personal life. She prioritizes integrity in every business interaction and believes that true success comes from teamwork and understanding different perspectives. Outside of work, she enjoys family traditions, celebrating Cuban culture, and spending quality time with loved ones.
