About Annie

Anne Burtch serves as Executive Director of the Red Oak Family Foundation, which she founded in April 2022 based on her passion for supporting families with autism, inspired by her youngest son. She draws on her professional background in human resources and teaching, along with a Master's in Education from DePaul University and an undergraduate degree in journalism from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Anne also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua for over two years, an experience that reinforced her commitment to community service. In her role, she manages social media, handles writing for the website and events, facilitates meetings, and brings people together to advance the organization's mission. She participates in the Burlington Civic Association and Network Upper Arlington, and previously served as PTO president for her children's elementary school while supporting causes such as Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Ten minutes with Annie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my family. My parents taught us the importance of working hard and that things aren't given to you, you really have to work for things. The best things are worth working for. That helps in starting Red Oak because it is a lot of work to start anything, and when you put in the work you'll see the reward.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice came from my parents who encouraged us to study abroad in college and have other life experiences before settling down. They said there's no rush to find your career right after college. Taking that time helped me figure out what I wanted to do.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Giving back to your community will always give you something in return, even if not monetary. It's important to feel good about what you're doing and know you're serving the community. Be passionate about what you're doing and focus on something you care about and that you're good at, as it will have longevity.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include finding board members who have time to give back because people are busy with family and work lives and overscheduled. Opportunities exist because the field of supporting autism families is untapped; there is a huge need and so much space for new ideas like classes or events.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Kindness and honesty are really important. It's okay to make mistakes and learn from them. Telling the truth from the beginning is key.
