Her Interview
Ten minutes with April
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success largely to the example set by my mother. I watched her work full time, take on part-time jobs, and dedicate herself to helping others, often without seeking recognition or the spotlight. As her only child, I once viewed life primarily from my own perspective, but as I grew older, I came to understand the depth of her compassion and the impact she had on the people around her. She is known for her calm demeanor, genuine kindness, and willingness to support others, and witnessing the way she served her community has deeply influenced who I am. I strive to follow her example by genuinely helping people, making a meaningful and lasting difference, and positively impacting others whether or not anyone is watching.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to take the time to go further. I believe in learning from the people who have supported me, lifted me up, and helped me reach where I am today, then using those experiences to go even higher. To me, that is how we contribute and honor the investment others have made in us. I also believe strongly in reaching back to help others along the way. I never want to climb so high that I forget where I came from or the people who helped me get there.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the education and higher education fields is to create a clear vision for the bigger picture you want to achieve and then work backward to determine the steps necessary to reach it. Seek professional guidance from people who have experience and expertise in the areas you aspire to pursue rather than relying on hearsay. It is also important to find mentors and professionals who understand your background, goals, and vision, because not everyone will fully understand where you are coming from or where you want to go. By defining your long-term goals, developing a strategic plan, and surrounding yourself with the right guidance and support, you can build a meaningful and successful path forward.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is having to continually prove my value, expertise, and knowledge, particularly as a woman in a male-dominated environment. I have experienced situations where bringing a down-to-earth and approachable perspective has sometimes led others to underestimate me or not take me as seriously, and as a Black woman, I have also faced the challenge of not always being fully acknowledged or recognized among my peers. I noticed that people began to take me more seriously after I earned my doctorate, which highlighted the additional barriers women, and particularly Black women, can face in administrative leadership. At the same time, I believe the opportunities are tremendous. There is a growing need for greater representation of women and Black women in leadership, and people are increasingly looking for diverse voices, perspectives, and experiences. I see an opportunity to use my expertise and position to build trust, open doors, and demonstrate what is possible for those who come after me.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide me most in both my professional and personal life are rooted in my Christian faith. I strive to approach everything I do as an act of service to God, leading with compassion, integrity, humility, and a genuine desire to help others grow and become the best versions of themselves. I want the people I encounter to feel the love, care, and respect I have for them, while also reflecting my love for God through my actions. My faith motivates me to serve others, encourage their potential, and make a positive difference in their lives.
